The speaker asserts that only when designed to meet the needs and interest of every student can education be truly effective. To some extent I agree with this claim that education will function better if everyone’s need is satisfied. However, it is impossible and sometimes unnecessary to do so . Moreover, whether education is effective depends on many other aspects .
It is undeniable that every student comes from different family so that everyone has his/her own needs and interests which differs from others’ , and by meeting these needs education could help everyone develop into a whole , useful person. For example , children from poor community usually feel less confidant (confident)than those from upper class, which may do harm to both their metal health and studying. So it is justifiable for teachers and educators to pay more attention to and take more care of them . In others cases when a few students are gifted in some kinds of art, literature , sports, science , and their families could do little to help them ,it is schools responsibility to offer courses and specific teachers to help them extract their talent. So there are many advantages in meeting individual needs.
While I concede that education should meet everyone’s need , it is not to mean that schools should satisfy every need of everyone . I base my view on two facts . Firstly , it is impossible to achieve these. As I mentioned above , children have various interests, it is unpractical and unaffordable for schools to meet all these needs as education resources are limited . Moreover, as population continues to grow at a rate much higher than that of education budget, schools take more pressure in cost and quality , which make it more difficult to meet students’ special need.
The second reason for my opinion is that in many conditions it is unnecessary for schools to meet some children’s need. It is a common sense that students ,especially at low level , may take interests of many unreasonable things such as gun, violence, qualified movies , PC games and so on. Should schools meet these needs? Absolutely not. And in contrary , teachers must try to persuade students to abandon these tends , guide them to some other beneficial interests , and ask for parents’ help in doing these. Even when children’ desires are reasonable, sometimes schools should not offer all them want. When a student need some books not found in school library , it is better for teacher to advice students to go to public library and teach them how to borrow than to get these books for students. By this way education can better help students learn more and healthily develop .
Then turn to what effectiveness of education depends on . Besides the quality of individual development of students ,there are other goals of our education ,of which I think the most important is the goal of meeting country and society needs. As science and technology play a most significant role in promote the status of a community and standard of our life , one country need lots of scientist , skilled works and technicians to thrive . The best way , if not only , to achieve these is education. So education is not effective if it failed to satisfy society desires even if it meets individual interest.
In sum , education should do its best to meet students’ needs and interest but not those inappropriate ones . But in order to be effective , education should do more than this by meeting society desires and other goals . By this way could students , education, society and one country develop healthily.
