What the speaker said is contained of two points: that the non-mainstream areas of inquiry such as astrology, fortune-telling, and paranormal pursuits is vital for our human needs, and that is also vital for society. I concede that they can satisfy certain human needs, particularly in psychological solace, which mainstream science inherent cannot provide. However, if they substitute for mainstream science or other areas of intellectual, the potential harm they insult to far out weights to their benefits in psychological solace.

   I concede that these non-mainstream areas of inquiry serve as the psychological solace satisfy some human needs. One of these needs involves the common experience that in some times we feel so confusion that couldn’t make choices and decisions steadily. Faced with the potential bad results, we feel regret, unhappy, and other bad feelings. So we try to shift the burden to some mysterious authority such as tarot cards for guidance. And that helps us feel better in some extent.

  As we are mortal inherently, some of us try to find some extend of life. They attempt to connect with the so-called “soul” of their loved dead people or search for the past life as well as the afterlife. The non-mainstream areas of inquiry seem can bring some good feelings as a solution to make the dream come true.

  However, if those non-main stream areas of inquiry substitute for the reasonable and logical mainstream science, the harm far out weights the benefits of psychological solace. On a personal level, it is very hard to declaim its illegal, for we couldn’t know what would happen in afterlives. And those who stick to the irrational benefits stubborn always result to unreason, and that may harm themselves and others. On a social level, the harm benefits always result to panic, hatred, and even atrocities. A famous example in China that one so called “religion” who exclaimed that the earth would explode in 2000 had insult great panic, but was proved untrue.

  In sum, I concede that the non-stream areas of inquiry as astrology, fortune-telling, and paranormal pursuits is legal as psychological solace. But it only play a role in our life, isn’t vital, not mention to the society. An even if we trust it and substitute for mainstream science, it will harm us and others. So in my view, it is a risk to trust the non-mainstream areas of inquiry such as astrology, fortune-telling, and paranormal pursuits.
