TOPIC: ISSUE103 - "The study of history has value only to the extent that it is relevant to our daily lives."
History provides us with complete stories about the causes and effects. Its studying can cultivate our critical thinking, offer a full appreciate of our country and society, and give us aesthetical satisfaction, as well as smooth our daily lives.
From history, we get some lessons about how to act in our daily lives. In an individual's religion or race, history tells him the importance of some festival, a certain kind of food or dress, and so on, which will help him be accepted in his own circumstances. The stories of some people in history tell us the most important characteristics for a successful life. For example, the famous politicians' lives teach us that if our goal is to perform in the government, we need to practice our skills of leading, and persuading. Albert Einstein's ugly little benches help us regain our confidence that everyone has his own advantages and disadvantages, and that we can reach our own stage if we make use of our advantages. Even Van Gogh's gloomy life can give us some consolation that to stick to your dreams, you need to learn to make friends with aloneness, persistence and diligence. Besides stories of great people, history also provides ordinary people's experiences of fighting against adversity, which can help us succeed in our daily lives.
However, such benefits of studying history are so narrow that sometimes we miss the main value. For one thing, history, full of genuine records of human lives, offers us a number of settings to cultivate our critical thinking. Such remote settings, which have little similarities with our daily lives, force us to reason not to feel. Then, in approaching those old cases, we learn to accumulate pertinent informations, then carry out a full examination to get our own opinions. Through such processes, we learn to exercise our brains and minds to solve problems not only in history but also in our own lives. In this sense, history, the whole story about the causes and results(which may have nothing to do our common lives), offers us a perfect stage to practice our mind which entitles us to see things clear. For another, history studying is essential for the country. For a nation, its history unites his people together. The nation's prosperous period lends proud to his people, while its gloomy days in wars or unstable situation inspire his people to attribute to the country's development. Besides such spiritual needs, history studying can give us warnings and suggestions about the construction of the country. The studying of the Big Recessions can give us some advices in tackling economical problems. The unstable times in history show the government that certain criterions need obeying. The causes of two world wars remind the whole world how to avoid another doomed big scale war. Last but not least, to those searching for aesthetical values in history, history studying is a kind of art, even if it has no pragmatic use, those involved get satisfaction in such experiences as figuring out a whole picture of history.
Besides the benefits mentioned above, still some other value remain uncovered. Yet, it is safe to include that the studying of history transmits messages from our ancestors which ranks from individual discipline to society development, not merely focusing on our ordinary lives.
