OPIC: ARGUMENT2 - The following appeared in a letter sent by a committee of homeowners from
the Deerhaven Acres to all homeowners in Deerhaven Acres.
"Seven years ago, homeowners in nearby Brookville community adopted a set of restrictions on how the community's yards should be landscaped and what colors the exteriors of homes should be painted. Since then, average property values have tripled in Brookville. In order to raise property values in Deerhaven Acres, we should adopt our own set of restrictions on landscaping and house painting."
In this letter, the committee of homeowners from the Deerheaven Acres (DA) concludes that adapting their own set of restrictions on landscaping and housepainting can raise property values in DA. The writer cites Brookville community showing that average property values have tripled since they adapted a set of restrictions on how the community’s yards should be landscaped and what colors the exteriors of homes should be painted .However, the writer's arguments relies on a series of assumptions and is therefore unconvincing as it stands.
To begin with, the arguer commits a fallacy of "since then, therefore because of this” in assuming that adopting a set of restrictions regarding the landscaping of yards and the painting of the exteriors of homes has results in the tripling of yards of the property values in Brookville community. There is no evidence that the united decorations in
Brookville community has caused tripled rise of average property values .We can not deduce the conclusion just by 'since then’, for it is a ridiculous deduction. There could be others facts that bring about the rise, for instance, the policies of the government, and the influence of the local economy and so on. Without ruling these reasons what lead the rise of property values in Brookville ,the arguer can not convince me that the united decoration make contributions to it.
Even assuming that it is the united appearance in Brookville community that brings about the rise of average property values there, yet the mere fact that the rise of average property in Brookville community hardly suffices to infer any such trend in DA, if a set of restrictions on landscaping and housepainting has be made established. The difference between the two communities, such as, the traffic, the hospital, the entertainment, the environment, may influence the rise of average property values. Based on a false analogy, the arguer unfairly assumes that DA could necessarily raise its property values by simply copying the policy of Brookville.
Besides, the united appearance of the community needs every resident's agreement, there should be a survey to inquire the opinions and advices of them. If the restrictions have been enforced, it may destroy the characteristic of variety in the community, and may lose some of the residents.
In sum, the argument relies on what might account to a poor analogy and a unreasonable deduction. To strengthen the argument the arguer should provide better evidence of the exact reason that brings about the rise of average property values in Brookville. To better evaluate the argument we would need more information about the conditions in DA, and the difference and the similarity between the two communities. |
