Does competition play a beneficial role or detrimental role to the society? This question has become a hot debate during these days. People may have different opinions on this argument. The speaker believes that the advantage of competition to the society overweighs the disadvantage on the whole. I tend to fundamentally agree with the author's opinion for reasons having to do with the impetus of our society's development and individuals. However, like a double-edged sword, excessive or inappropriate competition may bring deterioration.
To begin with, the chief reason why competition is finally more beneficial than detrimental to society is that competition is the essential impetus of the society's development. Firstly, from the point of individuals, trough competing, the one who is most capable is put on the right place and then produce much more values than those who are not competent. Based on the law of jungle, we know that "survival of the fittest" and high competition may arouse extremely mental and psychological stress for individuals, which will seriously undermine the interest and ability of improving, finally leading to the improvement of our life. Secondly, from the point of society, rapid, sustained, stable and coordinated development of the society needs competition. In order to be more specific, I would like to cite the example of the market economy. To survive in the battlefield of business and to enhance their competitive advantage, enterprises have to research and develop high-tech to invent and make products with high quality, multi-function and low price, which not only brings more benefits for the consumers, but impels the development of the society.
Further more, another compelling reason why the advantage of competition ultimately outweighs the disadvantage is that competition urges people to ceaselessly challenge and break the limitation of human beings. To give an example, the Olympic Games, started in Greece about 3,000 years ago, is a form of competition, which not only urge people to break up records and challenge the utmost limits of human beings in every kind of sports, but also has brought people together in peace to respect universal moral principles.
While, on the other hand, if a competition is fraught with adulteration and illegality, it will bring deterioration to the society rather than progress. A case in point is related to the market economy. If enterprises in the market produce fake products to deceive consumers or the competitors of the same industry start a price war in order to attract more customers, the market would fall into a vicious circle and face a great obstacle to the develop. Further more, unsuitable competition might result in a lot of serious social problems. As is known to all, competition between nations in the form of arms race among powers is not only a waste of limited resources that we have on this planet, but might bring massive destruction to human beings one day.
To sum up, we can safely draw a conclusion that the speaker is basically convincing in that competition ultimately is more beneficial than detrimental to the society, although in some cases, inappropriate competition might bring deterioration to the society rather than progress. We should and could take some effective measures to avoid such deterioration. |
