With fewer and fewer users, some minor languages are suffering the danger of dieing out. I agree with the author's broad assertion that the governments of countries with minor language should take measures to prevent such languages from disappearing. In addition, any individual of the country should also take the responsibility in preserving their language.
First of all, we have to be aware of the fact that many world's lesser-know languages are suffering extinction because of the decreasing popularity in practice. There may be many reasons attribute to this consequence, among which globalization contribute greatly to the extinction of minor languages. Diverse countries and races are called for communication and interaction to reach to the better mutual understanding with the pace of globalization. For this matter, people with different languages have to resort to a more widely used language instead of their former language, such as English and French, to help them communicate with others more efficiently and correctly. Hence the popularity of the own languages would be heavily weakened by the universal spread of new language, which accelerates the process of extinguishment of former language. Besides, the migration of people from remote place to modern societies also plays an important role for extinction of the minor language. Since the migrants, in most cases, start to eliminate the obstacle which keep them out of the native culture with the fundamental problem of language, which means they would learn another language to substitute their own to be better involved in native culture. Therefore their own language which may be already utilized by small size of users would be on the brink of dieing out. Taking into account the forenamed factors, the lesser-know languages do face the trend of disappearance.
Concerning about the significant role any language plays for the history of human beings, the governments of countries in which the minor languages are spoken should take active measures to prevent them form disappearing. Admittedly, any languages are created by our ancestors and handed down from one generation to another during thousands of years. They are the precious historical heritage of human beings which serve as one of the most characteristic symbols of certain cultures. Additionally, In order to conserve the diversity of culture to flourish human society, it is indispensable to protect every language including less-know one. With the significant role played by the minor language, the government should, without questions, preserve them from dieing out. And the government is not only sensitive to recognize severity of this problem but also capable of protecting the language efficiently from disappearing. Once the government recognize the negative trend of the extinction of the language they would take positive actions to manage the national wide campaign to attract citizens’ attention to the disappearing language: providing financial support to investigate the losing language and then publicizing the profound meanings and significant roles of the language, providing more courses in schools’ curriculum to further the interests of students toward that language and so on. Then, to some extent, the minor language would get the chance to be preserved and come down to our descendants.
In addition, the only endeavor from the government is not sufficient enough to better protect the language. It is every individual’s responsibility to actively engage in this process. After all, the function of government is to frame the overall strategy to protect losing language and the individual is the practical factor through which the strategy would actually work. If the individuals in the country hold the optimistic view of the language, they would be interested in using the language and spread it to other countries. However in the opposite side, people would disregard even exclude the language which would contribute to its extinction. For this matter, government should encourage every individual to engage in using and promoting the losing language.
In sum, some certain lesser-know languages do confront the danger of being losing. However, it is the indispensable obligation of the government of the country, in which the language are spoken, as well as its citizens to take efficient measures to preserve the language when taking into account the crucial importance of the language in human history.
