TOPIC: ARGUMENT147 - The following appeared in an editorial in a business magazine.
"Although the sales of Whirlwind video games have declined over the past two years, a recent survey of video-game players suggests that this sales trend is about to be reversed. The survey asked video-game players what features they thought were most important in a video game. According to the survey, players prefer games that provide lifelike graphics, which require the most up-to-date computers. Whirlwind has just introduced several such games with an extensive advertising campaign directed at people 10 to 25 years old, the age-group most likely to play video games. It follows, then, that the sales of Whirlwind video games are likely to increase dramatically in the next few months."

According to the survey and the introduction made by Whirlwind video games(Wvg), it seems quite possible that its sales will hike up soon. However, this argument's credibility is undermined by several flaws.
The arguer bases his argument on the assumption that the participants in the survey are 10-25 years old, which is not so obvious without further information. Since the arguer fails to provide the details of the people who answered the survey, we can safely assume that those people, who asserted that video-game with lifelike graphics are their favorite, are economical independent, which means that they can buy things according to their preference. And common sense tells us that people at their 10-25 seldom have enough money to buy the most up-to-date computers. If so, Wvg's advertisement may be directed at wrong targets. Even it is players at 10-25 that appreciate the lifelike graphics and they do receive the information form the advertisement, with a thin wallet, they remain potential buyers who can do little to the sales. Unless the arguer can clarify that the required computers are accessible to the players, his assumption is unwarranted.
Another aspect the arguer fails to consider, and which may seriously weaken his assumption, is the reason of the declining sale of Wvg. Given that players stop buying Wvg's products due to its bad quality and high cost, those new games may be ignored no matter how attracting, since there is no guarantee that players cannot do without the new games. And in such case, the advertisement has no use.
Moreover, the survey may not be reliable. The arguer provides no evidence of the size of the survey and the way it is conducted, then, it is quite possible that the surveyor only picked up one video-game player who is almost 40 years old and asked him the question, providing the licit that whether he took the lifelike graphics an important aspect of a game. Given this is true, the survey has a good chance not to represent the general idea, which can mislead Wvg.
Based on the above analysis, I insist the arguer study more about the sale failure in the past two years and provide more details about the survey to better support his argument. |
