TOPIC: ISSUE150 - "Because of television and worldwide computer connections, people can now become familiar with a great many places that they have never visited. As a result, tourism will soon become obsolete."
WORDS: 613 TIME: 1:04:31 DATE: 2007-7-12
The Great Wall came into my mind even in kindergarten, but I never know the feeling about standing on it until I climbed on it several years ago. Thus, based on my own experience, I think that we can get to know some places through TV and computer, but not become familiar with them. And maybe through these connections, tourism can be even more popular.
The reality and the pictures are different in several ways. Through the pictures, the beautiful landscape is presented to us, we can admire the details and hear the water's song, the people's laughter, but know nothing about the gentle feeling when breeze touches your faces, and what is like when you wake up in the morning in a quiet valley to wait for the sun. To illustrate, you only know the Great Wall is a fantastic building to the world, but you have no personal feeling with it unless you go there by yourself, and the word "great" or "fantastic" makes no sense to you. People also describe the Effiel Tower great, but what is the difference between them. We see abundant photos about the sea, but still have no sense about the little salty wind. In addition, the cameral shows you the contracted world, since it can capture the whole image of a big building only from a distance and when it shows you the detail, you get a little part. You admire the little picture of the Statue of Liberty, knowing nothing about the solemn affection when standing under the majestic statue. What's more, the picture can tell lies. The photographer can manipulate his/her cameral to beautify the real world. Before I applied my university, I read every message about it and its classic administration building impressed me a lot. But when I finally landed on the campus, the administration building didn't greet me as I imagined, I even overlooked it while searching for the beautiful imagination. So, we can never be confident that we have known certain places enough through the TV and computer.
And to the travelers, the scene is only part of the whole meaning of travel. They hope to get some experience from the travel-- to make new friends, to taste different kinds of food, to bargain with the local businessmen for some novel gifts, to take part in some local events and festivals. They may take their own pictures, which they can share with other people, however, this time, every picture is a story of the traveler which may have no special meaning to others. The pictures become the traveler’s diary book, reminding him the interesting memory. All these things urge the traveler to set off.
Besides the traveler, the TV and Internet can invite more people to go out. Seeing the beautiful farm with lavender in Australia, reading the romantic stories about the farm, don't you want to stand among the lavender and take some pictures? Listening to the fast music along the Thailand seashore picture, aren't you eager to lie on the seashore? With the development of TV and Internet, people get more and more information about where to go in certain season, these facilities provide them detail information about the travel, they can choose their favorite kind of scene with suitable fees. Once people may hesitate to travel because of hotel accessibility and transports, now they can book their hotel and plane even before they leave home. In this way, the TV and Internet can bring prosperous to tourism.
In conclusion, travel will never be replaced by browsing the pictures and reading some articles on the TV or Internet. And the tourism can benefit from that information by attracting more people to go out.
