TOPIC: ISSUE208 - "The way people look, dress, and act reveals their attitudes and interests. You can tell much about a society's ideas and values by observing the appearance and behavior of its people."
WORDS: 534 TIME: 0:49:59 DATE: 2007-7-14
Generally speaking, we can get some information about a person by looking at him for some time, but still, sometimes such superficial message can tell lies. And I agree that the appearance and behavior of a society's people will give us some references about its ideas and values, since we always study a society from its people.
Firstly, an individual's look, dress, and act have connections with his/her attitude and interest. To illustrate, let's see some examples. A supervisor with a stern face may makes you alert when working under his management, since you can judge that he is very strict and earnest; you will talk easily with a teacher who wears a smile always about your school problem, maybe even daily problem as well. People in relaxing clothes, walking aimlessly on the street place enjoying life in a significant stage; while those in formal suits, traveling between cities and countries take work as their meaning of life. Generally speaking, all the above judgments can be true.
However, there are times that these phenomenal are telling lies. The supervisor cannot convince his followers that he will be very strict to them with a smiling face; in order to warn them to work seriously he has to hide his smiles, even though he is an easy-going colleague. And those who work day and night actually are tired of such life. If they can afford to change a life pattern, they may wish to work as little as possible and spend more time with their family and friends or taking part in some interesting activities. The harsh competence in the workplace drives people to arm themselves with things and attitudes that they really don't like. And in such time, your judgment from the appearance can be far from true.
Secondly, every society has its own characteristics which can be observed in its people's appearance and behavior. The society's value is represented by its people, and then passed down from generation to generation. And the ideas will be shown in people's behavior. In the Middle East countries, women are in an inferior social status, and they have to wear a special kind of clothes which cover the whole body from head to toe in public. And from this, you can judge that this society treat women differently. In Japan, people show high esteem to others, and you can judge this from their frequent bow to each other. In China, people show high respect to the old, which is an old virtue rooted in every generation. And you may see that in China, parents and grandparents are often cared by their descendents at home.
Admittedly, not every aspect of a society's ideas and values is shown by its people. A society consists of different kinds of people. You may notice a local woman in modern western clothes on Middle East streets. And not every Japanese respects other people, so is in China.
In conclusion, the way people look, dress, and act can give you some allusion about his/her attitude and interest. And when you try to know a certain society's ideas and values, its people's appearance and behavior are quite good references, although you may not get everything you want.
