TOPIC: ISSUE47 - "Society does not place enough emphasis on the intellect-that is, on reasoning and other cognitive skills."
WORDS: 428          TIME: 00:38:52          DATE: 2007-7-20 0:16:27

The speaker claims that society does not emphasize enough on the intellect-that is, on reasoning and other cognitive skills. However, in my view, it is right to emphasize on the intellect, while at the same time, the cultivation of emotions and feelings should draw considerable attention as well.

As a matter of fact, society, at least in my hometown, China, does place enough emphasis on the intellect, and even attach too much importance to it. To illustrate this, one need look no further than the curriculums which we are enforced to learn, such as mathematics, physics, chemistry, all of which are compulsory subjects since high school. The vast majority of knowledge learned in the classes of these subjects is seldom used in an ordinary person's daily life. However, no phenomenon indicates that there is a tendency, even a little, to reduce the proportion of the subjects in the education, because they all pick a rung to the ladder for practicing our such intellect as capability of reasoning and cognizing.

Nevertheless, society should never omit the effect that the cultivation of emotions and feelings has on us. Our physical life would be growingly rich, since the science and the technology become increasingly developed. The public then will turn to look for things that can satisfy their spiritual necessity, which is the very one function of cultivation of emotions and feelings. Only the two types of needs are satisfied at same time, can a person enjoy a colorful life, and together we can make a relative stable society.

Another compelling argument in favor of the cultivation of emotions and feelings, as well as intellect, should be paid enough attention at has to do with the fact that the development of society needs both ones. It is the significant development of science and technology that motivate the society progress in much extent, while the development of science and technology calls for the combination of intellect and emotions and feelings. History is replete with examples that a creative theory or a new invention often comes from the startling imagination or an occasionally inspiration of a person. Newton give the universal gravitation by imaging the moon to the falling apple; Light working without emit heat come from the observation of firefly; Radar's birth is benefited from the bat's ultrasonic system. All original ideas of examples mentioned above attribute to the cultivation of emotions and feelings, while intellect does the works left-that is improving them.

In short, only both the cultivation of intellect and emotions and feelings are attached importance to, can society cultivate a well-balanced person, who will promote the development of society in return.
