TOPIC: ISSUE208 - "The way people look, dress, and act reveals their attitudes and interests. You can tell much about a society's ideas and values by observing the appearance and behavior of its people."
WORDS: 549          TIME: 00:41:32          DATE: 2007-7-20 15:47:51

Is the way people look, dress, and act reveals their attitudes and interests? Can the appearances and behaviors of people tell much about the society which they live in, as the speaker claims? In my view, the answers to these questions are affirmative in some respects, and wrong in other respects.

To begin with, the appearance and behavior of an individual can be the indicator of their interests and attitudes in certain respects. Take an exact instance, some girls, on the street, wears tight clothes with fresh color to display their perfect figure and high heel shoes, from which we can find out that they place more emphasis on the beauty; some other girls wear clothes more casually and loose clothes and sports shoes, telling that they attach more importance to comfort and unbending.

Furthermore, we can tell not only different interests and attitudes from these differences, but also the different ideas and values of a certain society, to some extent. Take the girls for example again, girls in America talk about sex without flush in public while Chinese girls are even abash to mention it when talk with her friends privacy, let alone in public. It can be indicated that America is opener than China.

However, in most cases, only simply depending on the appearance and behavior of individuals can hardly tell precisely about their interests and attitudes, let alone the ideas and values of the society. It is often upon the climates of the place they live and the environment of the place they work that their decisions about what to dress depend. Thus what their dresses indicate is more likely the circumstance rather than the willing from their heart. To illustrate that one needs to look no further than that all the students in one school are in the same clothes, the same style and the same color. Could we draw the conclusion that all the students in this school hold the same interests? Of course not. It is the rule that they must come to school in the uniform that makes what they look like, not themselves. Also, consider, an assistant in a shop would be always polite and in good manner to his/her clients. But it is also cannot generalize that all the assistants are polite simply according to your observation to their performance.

Another compelling argument against the statement has to do with the fact that the young and the old in the same society are sharply divided into two groups holding two completely opposite ideas. The young seem to be more active and treasonous, advocating to publicize their characters, while the old are more likely conservative, holding the tradition, which will surely lead to two totally different looks, dresses, and acts. Apparently, by observing the two different groups of the same society, one can come to two conclusions, sharply different. Then how could you generalize the ideas and values of this society simply from this observation?

In sum, it is reasonable to conclude individuals’ attitudes and interests and the quality of their society from the way people look, dress, and act in ideal situation or at least situation involving few influences of the environment. However, in most practical cases, the ideas and values of a society depend on things much more than only the appearance and behavior of its people.

41分钟 550 字 很不错哦,   每段的意图都很明显, 不过有时不要含糊地说一句话就带过
