"So much is new and complex today that looking back for an understanding of the past provides little guidance for living in the present."

同意(小)不同意(大)都有
[Syllabus]
1. 学习历史人对于解决今天某些具体的问题确实没用;
2. 然而学习历史对于科学的发展、政治决策的制定以及经济的调控都有很大帮助。

Should people over look the importance of learning history just because things are so changeable and complex today? The speaker claims so and I also concede with this assertion insofar as history offers few specific strategies for living today. However, I disagree with the speaker’s claim that today’s world has no relevant with the past. I my point of view, understanding of history will benefit us a lot in science, politic, and economic.

Admittedly, communities are changing so quickly that people need to keep learning most of the new knowledge to cope with the developments and changes in society. For example, the appearance and spring up of computer and internet require workers in any department to learn the skill of using computer in order to catch the pace of the development of society. Another one is cyber criminal which appears only a few decades and has so few documents in the history that the learning of it from history is impossible. Thus due to the lack of many history records, to make a specific anslysis, upon which decesions are based, is totally impossible.

However, learning about grand accomplishment of the past can provide inspiration. For example, in the realm of science and technology, Aristarchus, Greek philosopher, proposed the heliocentric theory by inspiration even at BC, despite of the absence of detail. Then after observation and calculation over many years and finally solve the mathematical problem of the hypothesis, Copernicus finished his greatest work, named De Revolutionibus Orbium Ooelestium, which makes the heliocentric theory possible the theory to predict. Subsequently, Johannes Kepler established the Three Laws of Planet Motion, which correctly and somewhat entirely characterized the mode that planets move around the sun, through carefully mathematical analysis of the documents accumulated by Tycho Brahe’s observation of celestial body. On those basis could the Law of Movement and Universal Gravitation of Newton came true. We can easily draw a conclusion based on the example sampled above that the concepts of great scientists are mutually inherited, which turns the wheel of science forgahead.

In another realm of politic, learning about history can avoid autocracy and promote democracy, which is most critical to both nations and individuals. A case in point is Washington George, the first president of the United States, who gave out rights to his successor, leaving America an institutional guarantee of democracy, republic and liberty in terms of the new countries of Africa and North America which begin with democracy but finally degenerated into military dictatorships.

Also in the field of economy, it is the study and understanding of the reasons of the generation of history's economic crisis,the typical one is the Great Dprecession occurd during 1929 and 1935, that motivate governments of the developed countries to apply a macro control strategies which delay the periodic of the occurrence of economic crisis. And due to these study and understanding, there are less and less panic of both individual and national wide.

To sum up, though history has some limitation in providing details to today’s problem solving, study and understanding of the past would inevitably benefit us in about all sort of realms.
