time 45' word 590

Should practicality be seen as out great idol and be provided with all powers and talents, as the speaker asserts? I tend to disagree. While I concede that practicality have ever increasing significance in modern society, too much emphasis on practicality may be detrimental and at the same time attention should be given to the value of things that are not obviously practical.

Admittedly, in most circumstances, for the interest of both individuals and the whole society, pursuit for practicality is reasonable and demanded. In a society where competition is emphasized so intensively as ours, practicality is usually dispensable for anyone or any organization to survive and thrive. In commercial world, practical consideration serves as the most basic principle. It is impossible for any company or firm to develop new products or provide services without considering about the future market, cost and profitability. Companies who provide products for their own interest are most likely destined to failure. For politicians, pragmatic concerns are also crucial in determining their careers and effectiveness. In many case the primary job of politicians, especially political leaders, is to make balance among different interest groups or to satisfy the demands of general public. Politicians who ignore the pragmatic considerations but emphasize ideal plans are in most times risking his/her career and the future of the nation, which is what those leaders of Soviet Union did. In other fields like arts, sciences, education and so forth, practicality is also a important factor to take into account when making decisions.

However, undue emphasis on practicality is more detrimental to society than beneficial. Look back to history it is not hard to find that many great progress and development in human civilization are just made reality by those plans and considerations that seems ideal. And in today’s world, contrary to the speaker’s claim, things that are not obviously practical still have value. For people in business world, particularly those leaders such as top CEOs, only fulfill the goal of maximizing the profit of companies or satisfying the interest of shareholder are not enough. To make a company or firm be able to survive and thrive both in current world but also in future, leaders of companies need to make ideal thinking and planning that may guide the companies future improvement. For example, putting large amount of money on research and developing products that are absolute not harmful to environment seems impractical, especially in countries where no restrictions are enforced. But for one company future competitiveness and social prestige the input is needed and beneficial although they may seems ideal in a long time.

In the arena of politics, idealism has its position too. Although today’s politicians emphasize pragmatic concerns, we can not forget the fact that many social progress and government change are just made true by those whose view we consider impractical. If Mating, Luther, King abandoned his ideal of a society where blacks and white have equal rights, then blacks may still be forced to seat in the back of bus and have no right to vote. If Gandhi yielded to pragmatic considerations decades ago, India may still be colony of Britain and most kids are born to be low classes. Without those ideas that we consider not obviously practical, the world were not as prosperous as now.

In sum, although the claim that emphasis on practicality has merit to some extent, idealism should not be ignored fro it is still beneficial to today’s world.

In sum, although the claim that emphasis on practicality has merit to some extent, idealism should not be ignored fro it is still beneficial to today’s world.

即不是“可有可无的”?]In commercial world, practical consideration serves as the most basic principle. It is impossible for any company or firm to develop new products or provide services without considering about the future market, cost and profitability. Companies who provide products for their own interest are most likely[be destined to是一个词组,而be likely to 也是一个词组,所以这个句改为are most likely to be destined to failure会比较好吧?否则两个副词,一个修饰前面的动词一个修饰后面么?] destined to failure.[从商业转向政治,中间有个过度词会比较好] For politicians, pragmatic concerns are also crucial in determining their careers and effectiveness. In other fields like arts, sciences, education and so forth, practicality is also a important factor to take into account when making decisions.[最后这句话可以不要,因为并没展开论述,或者稍微提带后在最后对全段来个总结。]

Without those ideas that we consider not obviously practical, the world were not as prosperous as now.[这一段与段二举的政治例子有重复,可以把上面的例子换掉,一起放到这段来单独论述政治。
In sum, although the claim that emphasis on practicality has merit to some extent, idealism should not be ignored fro it is still beneficial to today’s world.
