ISSUE38 - "In the age of television, reading books is not as important as it once was. People can learn as much by watching television as they can by reading books."

As the development of science and technology, we are living in a multimedia world, where people can watch television, listen to mp3, and play xbox everyday. Though television weighs more and more heavily in our daily life, it is not ready to replace books, particularly from the knowledge learning perspective.

To begin with, books have been playing an unparallel role in accumulating knowledge for human beings. It is through books that the knowledge can be continuously stored and expanded. To date, there are millions of books covering almost all the topics that one could ever imagine. Books can tell stories of people living in the ancient Greece, explain the mechanic of a motorcycle, and even the way to make delectable food, etc. On the contrary, as a newly developed invention, the programs of television are not capable of covering as much knowledge as books. As a matter of fact, most programs nowadays are concentrated on news, sports games, or parties. Therefore, one can not learn as much by watching television as reading. For instance, it is not possible for us to learn the meaning, application, and synonym of a word from television while we can look it up in a dictionary straightforwardly. Moreover, we can also

In addition, learning from books is advantageous over television with respect to the convenience and flexibility. Books are smaller and portable, enabling us to read them everywhere we want. Sometimes people are not capable of watching television, but books are always available, as long as there is light. For example, there might not be a single television in a small island in the Pacific ocean where one is on his vacation, but he can still get to know customs and scenic spots of that region by reading traveling guidebooks, or entertain himself by reading novels in his spare time. Not only can we read books at everywhere as we want, we can also read them at any time. When learning from the television, one has to strictly follow the schedule of the program, and once he unfortunately misses, it may take a long time waiting for the program repeated later. But if one learns from books, he does not need to worry about the time schedule at all. Whenever one feels like reading, he can get the book from the shelves and start to read. Therefore, with the convenience and flexibility, learning from books can be more efficient as well as pleasant experience.

Admittedly, there is no denying that with the development of television, particularly of the quality of television programs, it can be easier for people to learn from television. On one hand, the sound effect and animated pictures of the programs are much more interesting than books, and hence are more attractive. Thus, it is a good attempt to let children learn knowledge from television, which can catch their eyes and arouse their interests. On the other hand, the colorful animated pictures are able to explain a certain topic more explicitly. While a phenomenon such as the photosynthesis may need thousands of words and several chemical equations to explain on books, it can be described clearly by a ten-minute program with moving pictures to interpret the mechanism and effect of that reaction. Therefore, due to the powerful functions in presenting and expressing topics, television programs can be a good supplement in learning.

To sum up, though the television is getting more and more important in learning, it can not replace the books in learning, with respect to the content, convenience, and flexibility. Currently, it is only a good supplement of books.

感想:看似简单,但不知道怎么回事,写起来却总是很别扭,郁闷。

Sorry for the delay.

Though television weighs more and more heavily in our daily life, it is not ready to replace books, particularly from the knowledge learning perspective. To begin with, books have been playing an unparallel role in accumulating knowledge for human beings(不太明白这句的意思). For instance, it is not possible for us to learn the meaning, application, and synonym of a word from television while we can look it up in a dictionary straightforwardly. Moreover, we can also(没写完? In addition, learning from books is advantageous over television with respect to the convenience and flexibility. Books are smaller and portable, enabling us to read them everywhere we want. Sometimes people are not capable of watching television, but books are always available, as long as there is light. For example, there might not be a single television in a small island in the Pacific ocean(该大写吧?Ocean。还有贫困区,没电区等可能吧,交通不便这个也可以,只是觉得突然想到太平洋小岛,很特别)where one is on his vacation, but he can still get to know customs and scenic spots of that region by reading traveling guidebooks, or entertain himself by reading novels in his spare time. Not only can we read books at everywhere as we want, we can also read them at any time. On one hand, the sound effect and animated pictures of the programs are much more interesting than books, and hence are more attractive. Thus, it is a good attempt to let children learn knowledge from television, which can catch their eyes(捕捉目光:记得JOJO用过eyeball,不知道这个和eyes哪个更专业?) and arouse their interests. While a phenomenon such as the photosynthesis may need thousands of words and several chemical equations to explain on books, it can be described clearly by a ten-minute program with moving pictures to interpret the mechanism and effect of that reaction(好例子!).
