"The absence of choice is a circumstance that is very, very rare."
Are there any circumstances that has no choice? Or are these cases very, very rare? In order to illustrate my opinion, I would like to quote an aphorism said by Shakespear: There are a thousand Hemlet in a thousand people's hearts. In my point of view, it is also tenable that there are a thousand definitions of choice in a thousand people's hearts, that is, the descriptions and conceptions of circumstances and choices varied vastly from person to person.
As is common acknowledged that every person is special (or to say unique to some extent) due to his backgrounds, religions, educations and even childhoods and many other factors, hence each individual may view the same world in different and distinct angles, thus come to disparate conclusions. The beauty in some people's eyes may transform to be gaudy in the others', the hardship in some people's eyes may well be altered into encourages in the others'. Concerning respective definitions of choice, Edison's speeches and deeds may be a vivid example. It is almost known to all that Edison failed for over a thousand times trying to figure out the ideal components of a light bulb, so someone consulted that he should quit doing such nonsense researches for the aghasting times of failure, however, Edison replied:"I only managed to find out a thousand method that will not make a light bulb." While his imperturbable and light-hearted character inspired many people, we must not ignore the fact that Edison's definition of choice is also remarkable. When others were desperated and depleted for the difficulties, only those who are confident and ambitious can distinguish the flash of hope from the sea of darkness. One more instance is a famous story of a shoes merchant. When some other businessman returned from a rural island told him:"People do not wear shoes there, you'd better go to somewhere else." However, the merchant viewed this island as a place of great potential, as a result he succeeded in selling everyone on the island a pair of shoes and thus achieved great wealth.
What's more, in some situations, there are indeed some choice available. However, it does not indicate that we can not create other options, just concerning the endeavors of Martin Luther King Jr. When the discriminations between black and white seemed irredeemable and inconcileable in the USA, both sides thought there is no other choice. For the white people, they had to rely on the seperation laws in order to stay away from the black in any occasions, while for the black ones, they had either to conform the denigrading laws or to rebel violently. In the midst of such controversies, Martin Luther King Jr. waged a campaign of non-violence remonstration which do not make anyone bleeding. This deed was regarded as a brand new and innovative salvation to the black and white in USA, and Martin was forever etched in the history. Still, saint as he was, Ghandi also led some non-violence revolution against the colony domination of Britain. Their insightful and brilliant speeches and behaviors left us tremendous legacies. We are instilled that whatever bad the situation is, we may not give up hope and stop searching for better choice.
Still, there are certain circumstances that were universally viewed as void of choice. Imagining during WWII, every man can not escape the duty of fighting for his country, however, only under such extreme conditions can we claim that we have no choice to take.
In summary, I agree with the notion that the absence of choice is a circumstance that is very, very rare. In most cases, we are either too desperate or dim-witted to see the choices, or we are not brave enough to create the brand new ways. |
