TOPIC: ISSUE148 - "Many people admire idealism, but it usually leads to disappointment or trouble."
WORDS: 630          TIME: 0:45:00          DATE: 2007-7-30

Does idealism usually bring disappointment and trouble to those who admire it, as the speaker asserts? I do not think so. While I concede that idealism often cause failure and trouble in today's society, from a long perspective it brings a better society and make individual fulfillment.

Admittedly, sometimes idealism indeed brings us depression as the speaker says. In nowadays more and more people admire what is contrary to idealism, that is, pragmatism. It means that people do mostly, if not only, the things that they think practical and predictable, and take into many pragmatic considerations when they make decisions. This is a way that contradicts with idealism but have more chance to success. For example, students who choose to major in some lucrative fields are more likely to achieve commercial success than those who dreams about significant social progress or solution of persistent social problems. And the later kind of students may feel great pressure when they pursue their dreams after their graduation, the pressure comes from their families, from their peers, and from their needs to survive. Besides, those ideal goals, such as eliminating discrimination and corruptions, offering equal opportunity to the rich and the poor, eliminating terrorism, are so hard to fulfill in a short time, which directly depress many people who admire idealism. So, based on these considerations, I think the speaker's assertion has merit to some extent.

However, when it comes to those notable figures, both now and in history, we may easily find that idealism plays a indispensable role in the progress of human civilization, which surpass the depression and trouble it brings about. Look at those great politicians and social movement leads, like Matin.luther.King , Gandhi, Lenin, Mao, who we definitely consider to believe in idealism. If they made their life goals as many politicians do today, such as merely  a high position in offices, or reelection, then the blacks in US may still be forced to seat in the certain section  of buses,  India may still be colony of Britain, people in China and Russia may still live in control of tyrannies. It is just the idealism believes held by those figures and the people they lead that made the prosperous world today and are still making this world better. And thus give people in this world joy and happiness, instead of depression and trouble.

Moreover, in quite a lot of circumstances pragmatism and idealism are not mutually exclusive, which we should not ignore. And this can best been justified by the situation in today's commercial world. On one side, any company or firm need to commit numerous pragmatic consideration when they decide which kind of product or service they need to offer, the price of their product, the styles of their ads, and the cost of running and operating. Without these pragmatic considerations, a firm can not make a survival or stay long in the competition for market. On the other side, idealism is demanded for one company to face future competition. Any company should make a plan for future development, and rightly and wisely making this plan needs idealism. A good example lies in the auto industry. Many years ago when TOYOTA make a plan to product hybrid cars, it was considered ideal and unpractical, but now, no one could deny the success of this plan, for the advantage it brings to TOYOTA  against any other auto giants. In other fields, in politics, arts, sciences, proper pragmatism and idealism are also not exclusive and when they work together, our society may benefit more.

To sum up, the speaker's claim has merit to some extent. But the speaker ignores the great significance of idealism in the development of human society. Moreover, the idealism and pragmatism are not mutually exclusive

And the later kind of students may feel great pressure when they pursue their dreams after their graduation, the pressure[which,改成一个定语从句,句子结构紧密些] comes from their families, from [这个from可以不要了]their peers, and from their needs to[for] survive[survival].

However, when it comes to those notable figures, both now and in history, we may easily find that idealism plays a indispensable role in the progress of human civilization, which surpass[surpasses] the depression and trouble it brings about. Look at those great politicians and social movement leads[leaders], like Matin.luther.King , Gandhi, Lenin, Mao, who we definitely consider to believe[believing] in idealism. If they made their life goals as many politicians do today, such as[这个词在这不妥,不用“举例”了] merely  a high position in offices, or reelection, then the blacks in US may still be forced to seat in the certain section  of buses,  India may still be colony of Britain, people in China and Russia[俄罗斯和中国没有与前面的毛泽东、列宁对应起顺序来] may still live in control of tyrannies. It is just the idealism believes held by those figures and the people they lead that made the prosperous world today and are still making this world better. And thus give people in this world joy and happiness, instead of depression and trouble.

And this can best been justified by the situation in today's commercial world. On one side, any company or firm need to commit[这个词在这用的不太合适,不如改用take into consideration吧] numerous pragmatic consideration when[before] they decide which kind of product or service they need to offer, the price of their product, the styles of their ads, and the cost of running and operating. Without these pragmatic considerations, a firm can not make a survival or stay long in the competition for market. On the other side, idealism is demanded for one company [company’s leader] to face future competition. Any company[‘s leader] should make a plan for future development, and [which needs idealism for rightly and wisely making]rightly and wisely making this plan needs idealism. [这个最后的举例不要比较好,而应在最后一句总结加深实用主义和理想主义合作给自己所列的商业领域的作用。否则只是一带而过的列举,太浅]

To sum up, the speaker's claim has merit to some extent. But the speaker ignores the great significance of idealism in the development of human society. Moreover, the idealism and pragmatism are not mutually exclusive

[小结:整体结构很清晰,例子和说理结合得挺好。只是多加注意段落内的语句连接,让它们更为通畅会比较棒:D继续加油!]
