Does contemporary technology make people so preoccupied with fragmented information and put too little attention on large events, as the speaker asserts? I tend to disagree. While I concede that too much fragmented information is presented nowadays, by virtue of modern technology people show more interest in large events and overall perspectives

Admittedly, contemporary technology offers us too much small pieces of factual information that may distract us from caring about big issues. In today's TV programs, there are too much trifle information, quit a large amount of which are useless and even wasteful. We pay too much attention on ads, on those small things that are interesting in other regions and nations; on many fashions about shoes, clothes, or those new developed electronic products such cell phone, mp3 player or computers; or on new houses, new cars and so forth. In the world of Internet, the situation is quite similar too.  We are surrounded by these kinds of information every day, which take too much time that could be better used in other aspects like emphasize social issue and political events. Based on this observation I think the speaker's claim has merit to some extent.

However, at the same time modern technology enhances our interest in those larger problems and issues. I base my view on two reasons. The first one lies in that while technology offers us much small pieces of factual information, it offers us more information on big issues and events. With the benefit of TV, we can know events that have or are happening on countries and regions all over the world. Many events, not just in sports, but also in politics, economy, scientific research can all be broadcasted lively by TV. Moreover, by virtue of Internet, we can get more real information by visiting those websites in other nations and culture, without being influenced by opinions of our own government and domestic media. These changes in the way we get information about events all spur our interest in issues and big problems. And as my observation we talk more about politics and social problems than ever before in offices, in campus and in restaurants. So I think by offering more information about big events modern technology enable us to care more about large issues.

The other reason for my view lies in that by modern technology we get more ways to take part in some issues, which also spurs our interest in big events. For example, if we have different opinions with some public issues or we want to complain about new policies and strategies, or we want to offer advices to governments and politicians, we have more convenient and effective way than before by virtue of modern technology. We can visit a few specific websites on those issues or visit government websites, or directly send email to those who we think could help us.  Another example is that during this years presidential debate we can question those candidates by recording  our questions on short videos and sending them to a given websites, then it is possible that a few of the videos may be shown in the debates as topics. This eventually heightens our interest in politics and social issues.  So, by enabling us to participate in some issues modern technology make us pay more attention to larger problems.

To sum up, the speakers assertion has merit to some extent for modern technology draws our attention both on small things and big things. And in two ways, that is offering more information and enable us to participate, modern technology make us emphasize large issues much more than before.

Admittedly, contemporary technology offers us too much small pieces of factual information that may distract us from caring about big issues. In today's TV programs, there are too much trifle information, quit[quite] a large amount of which are useless and even wasteful. To sum up, the speakers assertion has merit to some extent for modern technology draws our attention both on small things and big things. And in two ways, that is offering more information and enable us to participate, modern technology make us emphasize large issues much more than before.
