TOPIC: ISSUE222 - "Learning for learning's sake is an outdated concept. Today, education must serve an ulterior purpose and be directed toward clear goals."
WORDS: 610 TIME: 0:45:00 DATE: 2007-8-3
Has learning for learning's sake been obsolete and education should have some ulterior and clear goals, as the speaker asserts? After reflection I partially agree with the speaker that education needs to make some clear goals, and the most important goal is to meet social demand, however, learning for learning's sake also should been emphasized and in fact they are not mutually exclusive.
Admittedly, education should be directed toward clear goals as the speaker says. The prime reason for this lies in one of the most basic functions, that is, to provide skilled and educated people the society demands. Today's every endeavor of society needs specialized and highly educated employees and experts, since in consideration of cost and time, employers and companies can not take the responsibility of educating employees systemically and completely, then this task must been done by our education system. Moreover, to help graduates meet the needs of future employers, education, especially higher education, that is college and university, need to make clear what the employers want and then set them as the goals of education. For example, as the computer becomes an indispensable tool in society, colleges and universities need to prepare students with skills in using computers and provides specialized students in computer science. By this way could education fulfill its goal of satisfying and serving society.
However, while emphasizing social function of education, we can not ignore the significance of learning for learning's sake to education. In lower education, such as junior school, grade school and partially high school, more attention should be put on spurring the interest of students on learning and participating subjects and activities, preparing them for future study and life, rather than preparing them for future jobs. In my view, the most important goal of lower education is to help student develop into a whole person and offer he/her the skill to learn, rather than offer skills, in other world, educators must stick to the principle that making the students learning for learning's sake. In higher education, the principle is also important because education does not only provide worker for society, but also scientists and engineers to which learning is more for learning's sake than for future job's sake. And by emphasize this can a college and university make an academic environment for students who pursue for knowledge. So, based on this I think the principle that learning for learning's sake is not outdated and instead, should be emphasized.
In general, the concept of learning for learning's sake and the clear goals are not mutually exclusive and if they work together, education can function better in future. For example, when colleges and universities determining their goals in serving the society, emphasizing and making a academic environment of students can be made one of these goals. Moreover, emphasize on learning itself may also promote the quality of learning of the students who will not pursue for pure knowledge. Meanwhile, in lower educations, schools could add some courses and activities that may help students initially decide their future goals and career, thus indirectly guide some students to take interest in those fields where large amount educated people are needed, which is also a way of satisfying social demand. So, in different ways all level of education can both stick to the principle of learning for learning's sake and serve their clear goals -- to meet social demand.
To sum up, the claim has merit insofar as that education should have some clear goals. However, learning for learning' sake is not outdated and if added to the new goals of education, it can make a positive effect for education. |
