TOPIC: ISSUE87 - "In any field of inquiry, the beginner is more likely than the expert to make important discoveries."
WORDS: 534 TIME: 01:05:12 DATE: 2007-8-1 16:14:18
Is it easier for the beginner or the expert to make important discoveries in any field of inquiry? Although I admit the beginner has some priorities such as energy, passion, and the quality of doesn't fear for the famous people, I would also agree that the expert really has more opportunities to make significant discoveries.
Truly, the beginner always sees his field as a stranger, which is most likely to bring this field new and fresh ideas to help its development. Lacking of experience, they may take methods which they take for granted. And this is probably the most direct way to the problem. A few years before, there was a new about the dissolving of a famous math problem by a young man who just starting his research spending a few months. The report said at the meantime that an old professor who had made great efforts on this for several years also worked out this problem just after the magazine decided to print out the young man's passage. Unfortunately, as the rule whose passage is earlier should be on the magazine, the authority of this problem will belong to the young man and the old professor's several years equal to nothing. It is the new way this young man use to solve the problem, so beginners actually have chances to make important discoveries.
Although things above happens, it doesn't mean beginners are more likely to make important discoveries, for their special knowledge is not sufficient and their experiences on research is very little. Have a glance on the famous scientist or economists and so on in the world, they have their success mainly on their middle ages. As time passing, their knowledge accumulates, their researching area is deeper and deeper, and their consideration is more and more complicated. It seems naturally at this time that they discover something important. An old saying goes like this, hard works done, success comes. In my opinion, this is more persuadable as this is the natural rule, and credible as there are much examples around us.
Apparently, different field requires different qualities to success. Generally speaking, when it refers to important discoveries, the field of science is more likely to happen, which means the experience as well as finding new ways is of the same important. Determination is required, too. As society improving, information from the neighboring field show their importance nowadays, which helped Watson and Crick made the biggest discovery of this century. If take the consideration of economy and philosophy and so on, most people may agree that the experts is more reliable and can discover more important rules in the society. For example, an economist always have more experiences on market and money communication, thus is more probable to make accurate points of the situation and then discover social rules.
The speaker fails to understand the position of experts on the making of important discoveries. As a conclusion, on one hand, in the field of natural science, the beginner and experts have the same opportunities on having significant discoveries. On the other hand, in the field of social science, the more experiences people have, the more likely he or she to make important discoveries. |
