题目:ISSUE41- "Such nonmainstream areas of inquiry as astrology, fortune-telling,and psychic and paranormal pursuits play a vital role in society bysatisfying human needs that are not addressed by mainstream science."
Along with the developmentof science and technology, there are still many things that the sciencecan not cover. So to meet the doubt on the problems, people turn to theastrology, fortune-telling, and psychic and paranormal pursuits for ananswer, which as a result become indispensable in our society. Fromthis point of view, I agree with the writer that the nonmainstreamareas of inquiry indeed play a vital role in our life.
To begin with, thenonmainstream area satisfy human's curiosity by providing them anexplanation to the science-unsolved problems. For instance, in theancient years there are so many things people can not understand, suchas why the sun disappears and the whole world turns black in thedaytime. And at that time they just imagined(imagine)the reason for it, whichpromote their imagination and at the same time explain the problem(这一句最好能表达成:非主流科学填补了人们对无知的恐惧和不安).
Even when one has beentaught that the science is the only way out for all the questions inthe world, still he may believe in the non-scientific areas, since itpromotes his faith in himself and the world around. To get a trueunderstanding of this, we can see the example of moon. As we know, moon's shape is changing along with the position of sun, earth andmoon, but people are prone to believe that it revealed the trend(rise and fall,要与moon的阴晴对应着讲) of ourhuman's life too, So one do not need to be sad when he stays in hisdowning point.
Admittedly, the areas ofinquiry should never outweigh the mainstream science. The inquiry isjust there to provide another explanation for people, but it is not thetrue one and should not be taken seriously. Still one needs to believein the science as a whole, while turning to inquiry for fun or forencourage.
To conclude, thenonmainstream areas of inquiry has its indispensable meaning to thehumans, it promotes people's imagination and satisfies their curiosity;it makes the society more humanity by providing another explanation tothe material world; it brings out the self-confidence or carefulcharacter while used properly, simply put, the nonmainstream areas ofinquiry should be existing in the society by satisfying human needswhere the science can not cover.
