The speaker contends that it is groups of people rather than individuals who made the most significant events and trend, and the study of history does not place enough emphasis on the groups. I strongly agree with both aspect of this claim.

Those who oppose the speaker's assertion might point out that we may still live in the dark without the Edison’s great invention of lamp and we can not imagine what the desktop of our computer will look like without the Window Os powered by Bill Gates. Admittedly, the great contribution of key individual should never be ignored. Their talent, strong personality and diligence should be recorded in the history along with their great work, which yield advances, discoveries and innovations that serve to make the world a better and interesting place in which we live. However, in my viewpoint it is not fair simply attribute the great achievement to certain individuals not a group the work in or around them.

Admittedly, the key fingers’ influence on history cannot be ignored. Thomas Carlyle, a famous a historian of French revolution regards world history as” biography of great men”. Consider the great activities in history which always named by the time when they took place or the place where the stage located, historians also like to use a special person's name to label a great event in history, the one always is the leader or organizer of the activities. That helps to emphasis the critical role of certain individuals while overlook the real forces or the body of those activities.Without support, hard work and even great sacrifices of numerous of people it is highly unlikely that any events will succeed eventually as we now learned in history books.

To better understand the importance of the groups of people, you need look no further than those great buildings around world which built in history, some even built in ancient times, some famous one such as the Great Wall of China which was build 2000 years ago, and pyramid of Egypt which also are a project finished thousands years ago. We will be startled in the first sight at these great buildings. Considering the product farce (product) level of that time it become even unbelievable. But can you name one worker who took part in the project? There are a huge number of works behind these buildings, it is said that there was nearly one life sacrifice for every stone in the Great Wall. We don't know their name, but as a group, they should be remembered or at least recognized.

Consider the scientific area where contributions of individuals are supposed to be even more evident. A lot of physical and chemical theories or units (formulas) are named by their names in memory of their great contributions to the field. Newton, Aristotle, these names immediately come to our mind. It seems that it is these scientists whose talent and work guaranteed the achievement, has far less to do with the context in which their works were performed. Should the work of their predecessors be taken account into? Did the developing condition and social or product requirements helped? Where does the invention come from without the preparing work finished by the predecessors and without urgent requirement? All their achievements cannot derive from vacuum. The social development and requirement from outside is decisive to the great invention. Key individual's talent is just catalyst, return to Edison’s example. We cannot say there will be no lamp without Edison’s work. Maybe there will be another Edison at that time or a little later. There need a lamp and the theories and practices in this field are well prepared, the invention of lamp is just a matter of time, Edison’s talent and hard work shortened this time, the numerous related work done before or at that time of others should also be remembered. Newton once said: “I can see this far only because I am standing on the shoulder of giant”. He owned his achievement partly to others as the giant he referred.

In sum, key individuals contribute to the most significant events and trends in history. They should be remembered not of their own but as representatives of a group, because it is the group that actually plays the decisive role in these events and trends. In the final analysis, the inescapable conclusion, then, is that the speaker is fundamentally correct.
