185. "Scandals—whether in politics, academia, or other areas—can be useful. They focus our attention on problems in ways that no speaker or reformer ever could."

The speaker asserts that scandals in professional fields can be helpful because they draw our attention in many ways. I concede that sometimes scandals indeed reveal something people should know and help people monitor their leaders. However, the speaker overstates the significance of scandals because he does not consider that scandals always have some negative effects on our society, whether in politics, academia, or other areas.

Admittedly, scandals can attract public’s attention efficiently and effectively compared other speaker or reformer could do, at the same time, scandals can have a profound effect on those leaders especially in politics. In American history, there are presidents who lose public’s trust even step down for their scandals, such as Clinton and Nixon. Actually, these cases are rare and therefore are too specific and too weak to strengthen the speaker’s view. When the advantages and disadvantages of scandals are carefully examined, the most striking conclusion is obvious that scandals bring more potential drawbacks to us.

Firstly, scandals distort society’s positive attitude, value and strengths. It is true that scandals can reveal some darkness hidden in our society and attract people’s attention. However, at the same time, the problems following these scandals should be considered seriously.  Common sense and experiences inform us that a stable environment can help the improvement of society as a whole. Unfortunately, scandals always break this stable and peaceful condition and cause a series of crisis of credit and a feeling of fear. I cannot imagine the consequence of a society which lack of trust among its members.  In addition,  in the individual level, especially for those leaders in professional fields such as politics, business, and academics, who need maintain authority in their areas, scandals may be their vital weaknesses in their careers. Thus, scandals will lead to severe damage on society as well as individuals.

Secondly, scandals always overwhelm concern about people’s private live which should be withholding from public. Perhaps, in some sense, it is human nature that concer about otherone's private life. That's why those

Thirdly, perhaps the most negative effect is that sojhcjhhjiigigiifugikjmmetimes scandals are not true, but be made up by some certain political purposes.
