I basically agree with the author's assertion that in order to improve the quality of instruction at the college and university level, all faculty should be required to spend time working outside and academic world in professions relevant to the courses they teach. Afterall, it will be conducive to develop the faculty's research further in the practice as well as their theoretical level. Yet this principle can not be applied in the faculty of all the research field. If we can encourage faculty to spend time working outside their professinal field and propose a proper mode for them, the result may be better.
In the first place, practice is helpful to widen the perspective of the faculty, and improve their fundmental working ability. Currently, the faculty in the university usually work in office and do research in laboratory rather than investigate the the real situation in practice, let alone working outside. However, most knowledge in books is not enough for practice. In practice we can learn more practical knowledge meanwhile we can have the opportunity to combine the theoretical princlple with the practice situation, in which situation it is very helpful for us to develop our research further and accomulate practice experience.
However, it is not necessary for all the faculty in the college or university to spend limited time working outside their professional realm. Because there are a lot of subjects and research interests in college, some faculty may be major in engineering whereas other faculty may be major in theoretical research like mathematics, music or biology. To the faculty who mainly do research in the field of theoretical principle it maybe more proper to do experiment in laboratory where they are capable of finishing research task conviently. If they are restricted to working outside, their regular research and teaching task may be influenced. Thus this issue should respect individual's willing and should not impel them to do this.
On the other hand, there also can be other methods for faculty to improve the quallity of instruction such as hold some workshops between international schools, impel the development of academic communication, and establish better teaching evaluation system to monitor the college faculty's working quality.
In sum, it is actually a benefit for faculty to spend more time in practice outside to increase their working experience and improve working ability. However, the proposer should consider individual opinion adequately and investigate faculty's advices meanwhile consider if there are other better methods which can also have the same effect. Only if we conduct the faculty to realize this issue's principle in a right method, we can get the desired result.
