TOPIC: ARGUMENT200 - Statistics collected from dentists indicate that three times more men than women faint while visiting the dentist. This evidence suggests that men are more likely to be distressed about having dental work done than women are. Thus, dentists who advertise to attract patients should target the male consumer and emphasize both the effectiveness of their anesthetic techniques and the sensitivity of their staff to nervous or suffering patients.

In this argument, the author attempts to convince us that the advertisement of dentists should focus on male and the sensitivity to them. This conclusion is substantiated by statistics indicating men are more likely to faint. While this argument has some merits, several conspicuous flaws seriously undermine the line of reasoning.
In the first place, the author cites vague statistics which have few data in the attendee of the survey, the course of the statistics and the final result, that make the foundation of this argument unstable. Several suspicions are still haunting in my head which are how long the statistics last; whether the attendees of experiments are larger enough both in account and scale; whether the conclusion is authorized. Apart from these, if the health condition of male attendees are not as well as that of women, perhaps in the ailments of heart disease? Without ruling out all the suspisions, the statistics the author cited is, obviously, unwarranted.
Even assuming that the statistics which was used to support the author's idea is somewhat acceptable, however, the conclusion of this argument about the target should focus on the male patients are lack of evidence. Perhaps, the tooth condition of female are much worse than that of male, which means that the female patients are eagerly needing more care. Thus, this kind of advertisement make a gender predudiceprejudice and may not accepted by most female.
Even admitted that the object of the advertisement is, in some cases, suitable, the arguer makes a oversimplification conclusion that they are effectiveness in only two aspects --- techniques and sensitivity. The therapy after the dental operation is more important for dental patients in the reason that, for everyday regular eating and chewing, the recovering tooth are in a frail status and more likely to be infectious. Moreover, the condition of the operation is not emphasized which might be a element that more patients cares about.
In summary, this argument is persuasive as it stands. To make it logically acceptable, the author must show more details about the statistics and illustrate clearly that all other more important elements like the therapy after operation and cleanness.
