TOPIC: ISSUE180 - "Many problems of modern society cannot be solved by laws and the legal system because moral behavior cannot be legislated."
WORDS: 482          TIME: 00:45:00          DATE: 2007-8-24 22:49:51

I strongly agree with the author's assertion that many problems of modern society can not be solved by laws and legal system because moral behavior can not be legislated. Admittedly, laws can maintain the social stability and punish the wrongdoers to some extent, however, laws are not omnipotent, the myriad social activities can not be regulated by laws force alone, it needs the help of moral, and even depends on the function of education and publicizing.

In the first place, laws and legal system are capable of maintaining the social stability as well as keeping our life peace and far away from violation, drug, pornography and so forth. If someone does breach the law, he will surely receive deserved punishment, which is the function of laws. Especially in the modern society, many unprecedented events have usually happened in our word like clone, which received fierce criticism when this technology first invented, however, up to date there is still no legislation to prevent this technology to be used in practice in some country. Thus, with the rapid development of society and technology, the laws should also need to keep up with the pace in order to protect our society stable and safe.

However, another factor legislators should take into account is that laws do have the function to prevent people to do devil things, but they can not control or restrain people's mind. In the current society, unmoral things may take place oftentimes like sex intercourse before marriage, abortion, not respecting olds and teachers as well as the clone technology. All these unexpected phenomena needs to be inhibited by moral force. We could often publicize good moral behaviors in the newspaper or other mass medias and set up some examples, probably who are accommodating to help others or do a lot of contributions to the nation, for ordinary people to learn from. On the other hand, it is also a better way to resort to education, the students in schools is the future of the society, they will go to the society sooner or later, however, they are mostly influenced by the social phenomena, thus we should guide and cultivate them into a gentle person when they are studying in schools.

Finally, to sum up, the best way to keep our society harmony and stable is to combine the force of moral and legal system. Without legal system, our society will turn into an anarchy world where lives are likely to be rude and senseless. Without moral regulation. people will act just at the bottom of obeying laws whereas utilize the shortcomings of the legislation to benefit themselves without any concerning others' comments. Consequently, if moral regulation which will be publicized by the mass media and come down to offspring through education, exerts as a subsidy method of legislation to regulate people's activity, then our society will become a more harmony and comfortable world.

TOPIC: ARGUMENT167 - A folk remedy* for insomnia, the scent in lavender flowers, has now been proved effective. In a recent study, 30 volunteers with chronic insomnia slept each night for three weeks on lavender-scented pillows in a controlled room where their sleep was monitored. During the first week, volunteers continued to take their usual sleeping medication. They slept soundly but wakened feeling tired. During the second week, the volunteers discontinued their medication. As a result, they slept less soundly than the previous week and felt even more tired. During the third week, the volunteers slept longer and more soundly than in the previous two weeks. This shows that over a short period of time lavender cures insomnia.

*A folk remedy is usually a plant-based form of treatment common to traditional forms of medicine, ones that developed before the advent of modern medical services and technology.
WORDS: 360          TIME: 00:30:00          DATE: 2007-8-24 22:49:52

This passage is presented by the author to make the conclusion that lavender cures insomnia over a short period of time. To substantiate this point, the author provided a study that 30 volunteers who sleep on the lavender-scented pillow slept longer and more soundly than ever before. The logic of this passage seems reasonable at first, however actually, thorough analysis reveals that it suffers several critical fallacies.

In the first place, the result of the study lacks credibility and therefore doesn't lend strong support to the author's assumption. The volunteers' characteristics, gender's proportion, ages as well as their illness history are not provided in this passage at all. Thus we do not know comparing to their old situations how many people of these volunteers do have improved their sleeping quality to some extent. In brief, the presumption does not serve reasonable as it should be.

In the second place, the author fails to make me convinced that the folk remedy does have function of ameliorating people's sleeping quality. Because the procedure of the study is  problematic. In the first week the volunteers slept soundly but wakened feeling tired. It is entirely possible that the volunteers still do not adjust to new circumstance and as a result, their sleep was influenced largely.

What is more, in the second week, the volunteers should have been familiar with the circumstance than the last week, however, sleeping on the lavender-scented pillow did not make them have a sound sleep. It proves that the pillow did not take function. Why? But the reason is not provided in this passage. Furthermore, although it is mentioned that in the final week their sleep is longer and more soundly than in the previous two weeks. But the author fails to make me convinced without providing the comparison of sleeping quality between in the last week and before they took into this study.

In sum, to better improve the passage, the author need to provide more details of the study to make it convincible as it stands. Furthermore, the author should investigate the factors which actually influence the volunteers sleeping quality further before any right advice is given.
