I agree with the speaker's broad assertion that education will be effective when it meet the individual needs. However, the speakers overlook the feasiblity of specifica eduaction designed to each individual as well as the deterious consequences of narrow one's education only to specific areas.
The purpose of education generally includes two aspects: to provide knowledge that required in their future and to instill of basic value of human society. The first aspect of purpose in education should of course meet the individual needs and interest of each student because our society requires diversity, while with repect to the second purpose, basic value and thinking skills should be instilled to students whatever they want to do in the future.
Admittedly, education should satisfy individual needs and interests. But I want to contend that it is not the education itself to purposely meet such individual interests. First of all, it is impossible to devise such an education system that meet each individual specific needs in their education. Secondly, education's function is in introducing students to their interests and needs as well as providing oppotunities to exposure students in various subjects. More often than not, the effectiveness of education lies in the fact that most of students can find their specific interest during these exposures and at the same time, these interests are posvitive power that will lead them to contribute our society in their future. If education system initicially tries to find every individual needs, it will not serve as its basic function-enlighting.
Moreover, another purpose of education requires shool to provide basic values and principles as well as thinking skills to prepare a qualified citizens for the society. Such values as tolerance to others different opinions, cooperation spirits in conduct something with other people, as well as respect to the work of others are critical in one's successful whatever their specific career is. In addition, critical thinking is of equal importance in one's development. If education only focus on satisfy every specific individual need while overlook cultivating these basic principles and skills for one's survive and thrive in their future, it is incredible to say that the education is an effective one at all.
In sum, the effectiveness of education must base on the foundation that it prepare a students basic value of human society and critical thinking. It does not necessarily need to be designed to meet each individual needs and interests but must exposure them to various oppotunities to find their special needs and interests.
