According to the speaker, if all the teachers in college and university spend much time outside the academic realm in professions related to the course they teach, they will have a complexity background and be beneficial to theirs students in a number of respects. I fundamentally agree with the speaker for the reason that the more the teachers learn and experience, the better they will instruct students.

  Nowadays, the pace of technological advancement, social changes and academic progress is so quick that knowledge contained in recently published textbooks often lags far behind current developments. As teachers of universities and colleges in our modern society, they should not only peer at their books. Their working experiences in their professions related would serve to refresh their knowledge and follow the pace of the world. For supporting examples one need look no further than a software engineering teacher. In order to help students learn the newest knowledge, software departments in universities or colleges often prefer to recruit teachers with work experience from software companies, since they could bring new minds and ideas to schools.

   Admittedly, practical working experience in the non-academic world relevant to their major will also improve the faculty’s understanding of the course they teach. Teachers in universities and colleges are always doctors major in theory discipline, so they may have no sagacious insight to their majors. Indubitably, taking a job relevant to their major will help them deeply realize their knowledge. In order to demonstrate this point more impressively, let us imagine young mathematic teacher. As a doctor who have just gotten his degree, this young teacher   certainly obtain a great many of mathematic concepts and basic theories, nevertheless, he may lack the ability to use them. If he work in an economic institution or company whose main work is analyzing economics development with mathematic for some time, he will gain the abilities described above.

Also, working experience in relevant professions puts college faculty in a better position to help students adjust from campus to the job market. After living so many years in schools, students all have become addict to the campus life and often cannot accustomed to the social life outside. As a result, they have no idea of themselves and the need of the society outside, and they might feel depressed when they complete their study and pour into the job market. Facing so many choices, they do not know which jobs to take and which jobs they can do better. If a teacher with many work experience appears and give instructions to his students on job choices, you can imagine the students’ happiness.

However, going too far is as bad as not going far enough, meaning redundant outside work may do harm to instruction. Too much time spent on working outside the academic world in professions relevant to the courses they teach would doubtlessly affect their instructions in the classes. They should maintain the balance between the time spent on working experience and in classes.  

In conclusion, I do agree with the speaker that all faculty should be required to spend time working outside the academic world in professions related to the courses they teach, since through this working, teachers would learn new knowledge of their realm, understand deeply the courses they teach, and give their students instructions on job market. Nonetheless, they should not spend too much time on it, as teachers, their main work is also to teach students in the academic classes.
