issue 88 "Technologies not only influence but actually determine social customs and ethics."
It has been increasingly difficult to ingnore the top issue on the effects technology has brought to the modern society. The speaker asserts that technology not only influences but actually determines social customs and ethics. The statement suffers a serious drawbacks for the neglect to the importance and independence of the social culture and customs. Despite of the great impact on the modern society, science and technology can not be the decision-maker for the progress of the human beings' civilization. To evidence my viewpoint, the following argument is open to all.
Admittedly, it is commonly to be considered that our modern society has been changed by advanced science and technology dramatically, resulting in both benefits and consequences. Positively, people aroungd the world are taking advantages of the moder n techonology, by the convenient connection with the other part of the world. Globalization makes people in different cultures generally to appreciate and accept the foreign cultures, and not to be isolated anymore. Besides, the effects of advanced technology has a great impact on the traditional cultures and customs. It clearly shows the evidences from our daily life everywhere. One of the professon at Stanford University suggests that "people feels the cell phone is part of them. They are not whole without it, since phones connect them to the world." In the time absent tele-communication tool, face-to-face communication is the only approach of people at that period and they did not feel any trouble at all. The habits of our life have been more or less varied by the rapid development of technology.
Nevertheless, the mainstream of the society is human beings whose social customs and ethics can not be entirely determined by the techonology which is created by people themselves. In the development process of the society, the people's traditional custom and culture are also indispensable factors. The speaker's statement implies that the development of technology will inevitablely make the tradition disappear. It is entirely oblivious to the importace of the traditional culture. The case of Qian xuesin, the father of Chinese rocket history, adds great weight to the evidence of my argument. His wife was a musician, who majors in traditional German music. However, the immense difference between science and art makes them much closer rather than alienated. And it provided a decisive contribution to the success of Qian's scientifuc career. The reason lies that the traditional art saturates with not only a kind of lifestyle but also a profound and infinite ideology and a useful and special methodology which is substantial to both daily life and technology. Hegel said, "those that exist are reasonable." Traditional culture and ethics are still vital and will never be eliminated from the historical determinating stage.
Finally, what is the relationship between the technology and us? Human beings invented technology products to make them service for themselves. How can they allow their invention to relace our own civilization. It is no doubt that the customs and ethtics always play an indispansable and decisive role in the development of world, because they bestow on people a precious large warehouse of varieties of ideologies, methodologies, colorful legends, various living, eating and wearing styles from which we can learn a lot, gain more insight and, most of all, see ourselves more clearly and precisely. With the help of these, the world will be push foward in both science and technology and the civilization will come into a prosperity.
In summary, from such like and these considerations, it clealy appears that the speaker's statement is inconclusive that little attention has been focused on the independent and leading role of the human beings' culture in the developing process of the whole world. The science and technology are products of smart people and its finally task is to work for us instead of determining the mainstream of the society.
