Can technology perform the tasks of both influencing and determining social customs and ethics? My answer to this question differs from the speaker's partly. With the breakneck speed of the progress, technologies can determine social customs while it could merely influence ethics on several aspects including proposing novel issues to social lives and offering solutions to existing problems.

On the one hand, technologies determine social customs on the dimensions of individual, community and nation. In a word, the appearance and prevalence of the technologies forms our personal lives. Secondly, on the community level, the inter-individual relationships change in pace with the advance of technologies. For instance, the Internet, which connect the world into a whole, revolute the means of socialization, working and studying. Comparing with the former face-to-face discussion, electronic methods such as email or blogs render the communication to be performed among people who hardly recognize each other's face. Finally, in the national level, the technologies exert influence on the inter-relationships among countries. Fierce competitions in the development of technologies in fields of military, academia and agriculture determine the rank of countries in the international market so as to affect the diplomas. In a word, the technologies play a decisive role in the social customs.

On the other hand, technologies affect ethics by means of offering solutions and proposing novel issues. For one thing, advancing technologies bring about numerous inventions as well as new ideas or thoughts which may consulate the long-standing conflicts in ethics, especially religious conflicts. To be concrete, due to the propaganda effect of mass media, people are increasingly informed of the others’ believes and develop a sense of toleration to the distinctions among them, largely relieving the conflicts among various religions. For another, the technologies could cause negative affect to ethics by arousing new challenges that human beings have never confronted with. For instance, the birth of cloned you Dolly announced a milestone of genetic technologies but it took along with both a blessing for lethally diseased patients and a curse as potential chaos in social lives. Even if the development of medical technologies enables human beings to break the ethical rules with less pain and effort, the ethics still harness the wildness of techniques within control thus the human society could precede in order.
