The role of non-mainstream areas of inquiries-mainstream areas of inquiry.

I fundamentally agree with the assertion that non-mainstream areas of inquiries do satisfy human needs which are not addressed by mainstream science. But in my point of view, the role non-mainstream areas of inquiries play is limited.
To begin with, non-mainstream areas of inquiries derive from human’s curiosity and confusion to the unknown world people couldn’t reach or the state they can never experience. So it can satisfy human’s innate curiosity to a certain degree . For example, by telling people where will soul go after death, some non-mainstream areas make people feel more comfortable when they suffer from a fatal disease like cancer or the sorrow of losing family members.
On the other hand, we should not take those unscientific explanations for granted in consideration of the following possibilities. First, such non-mainstream areas of inquiries as fortune-telling and paranormal pursuits may be used by the governors as the tool to cheat citizens. Deeply believing in the allegation from the monarch or indicator that they are appointed by deity, people won’t recognize necessity of democracy, let alone struggling for it. Second, undue reliance on the these areas can lead to unwise decision. The famous Chinese poet, Lu You, couldn’t marry his beloved because their birth information don’t match according to the theory of fortune-telling which his parents profoundly believe in. Third, they may also hinder the sound development of science which can benefit humans fundamentally.
Finally, with the development of mainstream science like chemistry, astrology and biology, and more problems addressed, the basis and system of non-mainstream areas of inquiries is undermining bit by bit. Ghost fire, always seen in around the tombs,  are testie to be the product of certain chemical reaction involving phosphor. Another example is that humans can produce artificial rains by cooling the air to benefit the crops and it will be so ridiculous to pray for rain as people did in ancient times.
In sum, non-mainstream areas of inquiries can satisfy human needs that are not addressed by mainstream insofar as they can provide some kind of psychological solace in people’s lives, which cannot be achieved by the mainstream areas. However, too deeply depending on these fields would risk being cheated or making ill-conceived choices and thus endanger the whole society. And with the development of mainstream science, non-mainstream areas of inquiries are bound to play a less important role increasingly.
