The speaker prefers a uniform national curriculum for all childrenup to college instead of giving different regions freedom to arrange their owncurriculum. I agree insofar as there should be a common curriculum for somebasic courses, however, when it comes to other subjects, different regionshould have their own choice.
A national core curriculum would benefit students in variousrespects. Firstly, it would ensure that students in different regions can learnsome fundamental knowledge, social skills, and basic moral rule, with whichstudents could form some elementary thought on current society. Secondly, witha national core curriculum, it would be convenient to establish a evaluationsystem to guarantee the education quality in different regions. Thirdly, national courses would make it much easier for university to build upcurriculum and select study materials for freshman that are not below or abovestudents’ level.
Whereas, a national curriculum is exclusive one would induce certainproblems that may outweigh their benefits. First of all, it is impractical toimpose the same criteria on differing regions with diverse cultures, educationbackgrounds, and economic levels. For instance, computer course is very popularin high schools in big cities, while in some rural areas, people are too poorto fill their stomachs, and they do not what computer is. How can you requestschools in this area set computer course as same as schools in big cities?Besides, in some place with different ethnic groups, to learn ethnicallanguages and histories in certain grade is beneficial. From this process, children can learn how to respect each others and their special habits.
Additionally, at present, no society can give all students theopportunity to enter universities. For students without opportunity to enrollin college, it is necessary to provide them with various technical skills. Suchskills depend on many factors which may vary from place to place. A region withabundance nature resources should develop its agriculture, while other regionsmay put more weights on industry. As is known to all, students in anteriorareas may need to learn more agricultural skills, while students in latter mayneed to learn more industrial skills.
In sum, a nationalset curriculum amounts to a double-edged sword. In my view, it is better tochoose a much balance one with both national curriculum on some basic coursesand freedom to select some courses according to the local diversity. Thus, theeducation of our society will have a bright future. |
