The speaker claims that nonmainstream areas of the inquiry as astrology, fortune-telling, and psychic and paranormal pursuits play a vital role in society by addressing human needs which the mainstream science cannot. I concede that to some extent the nonmainstream fields actually satisfy what human beings want. While the   harms they bring about overweigh the benefits coming along with them.

Admittedly, their role in responding to individual’s inherent needs cannot be replaced by the science. They serve as part management consultant, part couples counselor and part guide. In a country addled by new pressures and choices -- to find a better job, a better mate, and to prevent bad feelings such as uncertainty, insecurity and confusion -- many seek advice from those they can afford, even on the sidewalk. Moreover, these nonmainstream areas such as fortune-telling can help make decisions involving life and death questions or billions of dollars, which people are eager to know. Even that they clearly know what charlatans said is not always perspective, they still would like to shift these burden of making difficult decisions and choices to some nebulous authority outside themselves. In addition, sometimes they can also provide the entertainment for relaxing the burden of one’s work, such as playing the stack of tarot cards for the guidance of the some funny thing in life.

Nonetheless, as a matter of fact, the benefits of such nonmainstream areas is merely limited to help some people feel better about themselves, while the potential harm such fields incur is far more than the psychological benefit. After all, all of those mentioned above is not based on the reason. Unduly believing in such ill-conceived theories which cannot be confirmed till now, people should consider about the daily business not on the ground but prone to imagine. Gradually, he would find himself failing to interact with others; what he think highly of is not suitable for the rest. Thus, this sort of loneliness might make people doing something illegal or jeopardized to others, since his want cannot be met.

Further, whether such nonmaintream areas can provide the effective and useful ways methods to deal with those problems mentioned above, that is a question. As a kind of pseudoscience, astrology, and fortune-telling and the like cannot justify what they predict right or wrong. In most cases, they are not correct; even that in some instances what they said become true, it is due to the psychological implication. From this angle, how can they show the right way for confused persons? It is just a method of trial and error without sound evidence. In addition, the debate between the astrology and the science is still going on without an end-at least till today.

To sum up, the speaker overstates the importance of the nonmainstream areas in modern society. No doubt that they can open a door to the better feeling for the unfortunate persons, while overlooking the devil aspects complied with them results in the unstable of society. Moreover, whether they are guidance or not needs to be further justified.
