"In the age of television, reading books is not as important as it once was. People can learn as much by watching television as they can by reading books."

Books, Still Indispensable

As our society has changed at a unprecedented pace , there turn out all kinds of means, especially television, for us to communicate with others, get information from outside, acquire useful knowledge, as well as entertainment, the importance of books as the only way for people to achieve all the above purposes in the past has reduced. However, that is not to say we can gain from books as much as we from television.

We can easily find out the advantages of television compared with books by researching their different ways of presentation, since providing colorful images and clear sounds is the natural superiority of television. In some degree, the purpose of creating literature is just that people need some sort of tool to record all the things happened instantly and can be conveniently passed by, as their memories can never be enough to memorize all what they see and hear, let alone deliver those to their offspring. Nowadays, the purpose of books in the past can be fulfilled perfectly by the new tool, television whose method, I think, is closer to our natural way of learning, that directly offer us the original information rather than some abstract words which need extra acquisition of the meaning of those letters.  Therefore, it is safe to infer that people can learn new ideas from outside more easily by television. And this can be obviously proved by educating children. When we show them a picture or teach them with some toys, they will acquire the new points of knowledge more quickly and impressively.

What's more, the modernized feature of television make it possible to associate television with other technological digital appliances and machines, which enforce the function of television, while this would not happen to books at all. The connection of television and DVD player is a typical example. In this way, the exertion of television has been widespread by playing different kinds of discs, including music for relax and entertainment, education software for learning. Furthermore, the less convenience of repeating and choosing different programs broadcasted by TV stations will be eliminated. No doubt it is multimedia rather than books with its simple words, at most some unmovable pictures that represent the trend of new era.

It is true that books become not as important as it once was in sense of achieving their original purposes; however we are sticky to the ancient means more fast than we suppose. Books do have something unique to provide which convince us that books are indispensable.

The lack of information of images and sounds cannot just be understood as insufficiency of direct messages, but larger space left for readers to imagine. That is why many people tend to read the original literature even they had watched the adapted movie in order to seek imagination which is one of the necessities of our spiritual lives. However imagination can be seriously decreased in watching television, because obviously during which we focus too intensively to the storm of quickly changing pictures and sounds. So in this respect, books will never fade away.

There is also one reason that television can not replace book when it comes to the delicate mood reading books gives us. This seems meaningful in assisting our learning, and even ridiculous for us to discussing here at first glance. However, how can you entirely deny that the feeling of paper instead of the radioactive screen could make a difference in some subtle way? What's more, it is common for us to bring a mini book along when traveling and read it among those glamorous scenes; while it's hard to imagine watching TV at those situations. Although we don't know the very effect of those kinds of experience, undoubtedly there's nothing bad and probably there are some profound values.

For the reasons given above, I strongly assert that on one hand, influencing by the prosperity of television, books turn less important than it used to be for its simple ways of delivering information compared to television, on the other hand, books are still indispensable for their values in providing imagination and unique experience when reading books.

Books, Still Indispensable

As our society has changed at a unprecedented pace , there turn out all kinds of means, especially television, for us to communicate with others, get information from outside, acquire useful knowledge, as well as
entertainment(和前面的communicate, get, acquire对应,这里用动词是不是好些?), the importance of books as the only way for people to achieve all the above purposes in the past has reduced.
