36. "The greatness of individuals can be decided only by those who live after them, not by their contemporaries."

Can only the people who live after a period decided the greatness of individuals while their contemporaries not? Admittedly the people who live after the individuals could judge a person more justice and fair that than the contemporaries for they can think the problem without the effections of particular period. Yet, in my view, the greatness of individuals should be decided at particular merit standard which is on the foundation of the particular background of the era.

Judging whether an individual who live before us is great is not a difficult task. Because we could get a lot of information about the person, even the results of some decisions made by the individual during his times. In addition, we will not involve with some stress from the society in that time when we comes to the decision for the individual. Taking Mao Zedong for example. The contemporaries would be suffered if they judge that chairman Mao wasn’t a perfect man that he has made some errors during the special period of Culture Revolution. After it, people could judge chairman Mao more objective for that they could see that terriable result of the Culture Revolution obviously. What more important is that they can present their points objectively for that the background of times has more sayings freedom.

While the contemporaries have the advantages of felling the changes made by the great individual.
At the same time, well knowing of the real background of the society will help to make the decision. The example of Maradona, a famous football player about 20 years ago, will provide the support for it. Although at that times the football fans perhaps consider that Maradona was a great football player, after all, the issue of taking drugs will bring much negative effection to him. What impress us is that the wonderful football matchs Maradona leaves, at the same time, we could consider the issue of taking drug more calm for he decide to be off the habit. Today we can judge Maradona more justice because we put more emphasis on tolerance for others.

Deciding an individual justice need to consider the standard of greatness based on a particular period background. Because different periods will have different standards for judging whether an individual is great. In addition, the time could erase some bias on particular period and provide more information for us to decide an individual’s greatness.

In sum, we can’t easily define the standard of greatness. So the greatness of individuals could not be decided by the people ion a particular period. Only do this, can the opinion be a meaningful thing that could provide precise judgment.
