Issue 51 Education will be truly effective only when it is specifically designed to meet the individual needs and interests of each student.

Education is a very complex process, there is no definition of education that is agreed by all, or even most educators. People hold many different opinions about what is education and how to educate. We also could not find a perfect system to fit everyone’s demand. So, I can not agree the statement that “Education will be truly effective only when it is specifically designed to meet the individual needs and interests of each student.”
Admittedly, educator should attach importance to the individual needs and interests of each student. The purpose of education is to transform young people into competent, upwardly mobile adults. If education is in accord with students’ interests and needs, they will make more effect to attain its goals. Contrarily, if education pays little attention to the interests of students, most of them will not do their best. I still remember when I was in high school, I was very interested in chemistry and always got high score in this subject. “Interest was the best teacher”, Einstein has shown great interesting in physics and mathematic when he was a child, Jordan also indulged himself with basketball from childish. Therefore, a high school student could get high score in her interested subject, and some famous people also were originated from their interest.

However, it is unadvisable to overemphasize the importance of the individual needs and interests. I will present evidence to support my standpoint.

First of all, many interests are whims and with out any plan or purpose. Students may enjoy football today and like piano tomorrow or find that neither football nor piano is our true love someday. Interest does not remain the same.

Secondly, the purpose of education is to help us become competent people. Simply put, we need to learn some skills to live in the society. In other words, we should learn something, weather we like it or not. Take math as an example, our daily lives need math concepts, the most basic one is account. Although many students are not interested in math, all of us have to study it. Another example, my major is chemistry, but I also must study physics, biology, math, computer and many other subjects. Without these knowledges, what I could do about my research is limited.

Furthermore, interest may be misled by other things. Without experience, students may be interested in something wrong, like drug, reckless driving and so on. Education should aim at the improvement of both student’s moral and faculties. Educators have to teach us how to tell right from wrong. Educators should teach us that everyone is equal before the law. Educators have to teach us that peace is the treasure of the whole human. Educators should teach us the importance of a strong body.

In sum, it is no denying that interest plays a vital role in education. However, the speaker’s assert is not so appropriate, if only the needs and interests of each student are emphasized, the education system will have many troubles to face. Therefore, the students’ needs and interests have to be regarded in education, but educator should not overlook the well-round education.

兴趣虽然是很重要，但说话不能绝对。“兴趣”不是达到结果的所有原因，而是重要原因，所以个人觉得这段的论述有些绝对。
