Issue 51: Education will be truly effective only when it is specifically designed to meet the individual needs and interests of each student.
WORDS: 468 TIME: DATE: 2008-2-4
Is specifically designed education really a better choice for individual students, like it is asserted by the author? As far as I am concerned, this complex issue should be examined on a case-by-case basis.
On one hand, I concede that specifically designed education is truly beneficial to students. Specifically designed education can better trigger students' interests, which will facilitate their learning process. The students can choose their favorite subjects without unpleasant association with the subjects they hardly have any interest. Most important of all, when it comes to those students who have a talent on certain subjects, generalized education can hardly meets their needs, which means they can not get enough concern from the teacher and they lack the information they need to fully develop their ability. Let us take Mozart, one of the greatest musician in the world history, for example, he showed his gift in music when he was very young, and very luckily his father, who was also a musician then, gave full attention on Mozart's talent and gave him specifically designed education in the field of music, which directly contributes to the future success of Mozart. However, I think it would be much harder for Mozart to succeed if he received generalized education when he was young.
Even though, on the other hand, specifically designed education has so many advantages as I discussed above, it is not, in my opinion, practical to conduct. First of all, specifically designed education requires a significant amount of money and a significant amount of teachers, which are both not that easy to get. It is hard to imagine how exhausting it is for teachers to design an education plan specifically for each student, based on each student's interest and capability. In view of the serious problem of population explosion, we all have to admit that specially designed education is not feasible. Moreover, it is proved by scientific research that human beings share many common needs in our life time. We need to learn how to eat and play with peers in the kindergarten, to learn about simple numbers and words when we are in the elementary school, to develop the ability of comprehending abstract formulas in high school, generalized education can satisfyingly meet out common needs for knowledge and by far, it is the most effective way.
As a result, what we really should do is to find a perfect balance between generalized and specifically designed education rather than go to the extremes. When these two work together, the students will benefit the most. A great combination of the two is that schools should continue the current generalized education and simultaneously offer some classes or extra-curriculum activities, such as a football competition for those good at sports, or a orchestra for those interest in music and so on. |
