Argument 180
The following is a recommendation from the personnel director to the president of Acme Publishing Company.

"Many other companies have recently stated that having their employees take the Easy Read Speed-Reading Course has greatly improved productivity. One graduate of the course was able to read a five-hundred-page report in only two hours; another graduate rose from an assistant manager to vice president of the company in under a year. Obviously, the faster you can read, the more information you can absorb in a single workday. Moreover, Easy Read costs only $500 per employee-a small price to pay when you consider the benefits to Acme. Included in this fee is a three-week seminar in Spruce City and a lifelong subscription to the Easy Read newsletter. Clearly, Acme would benefit greatly by requiring all of our employees to take the Easy Read course."

In this recommendation, the personnel director claims that Acme would benefit greatly by requiring all of our employees to take the Easy Read course, because people read faster after their participant in the course. This argument is somewhat reasonable at first glance. However, more circumspect scrutiny to the author’s line of reasoning reveals that several logical flaws render the conclusion unpersuasive.

First, the author’s conclusion is based on an unconfirmed presumption, that is, the more words an article contains, the more information it carries, and the faster a man reads, the more information he absorbs. However, the director has not shown any evidence to verify it. Many articles, in which tens of thousands of words contained, may talk about a banal issue, or just repeat an opinion over and over. And perhaps a man’s ability to master information, is determined not only by his reading speed, but by his ability to analyze what he reads. If so, the author should certify that the graduates are more excellent in the analysis of the literate materials, before he reaches the conclusion hastily.

Second, whether an improvement in employees’ reading ability can benefit Acme or not is under suspect. It is entirely possible that the employees in Acme are now working well enough, or little require in reading ability exist in most employees’ work. If so, requiring the employees to take the course and affording their cost may be an unreasonable decision.

Finally, the author has not shown enough information about the two graduates he mentioned. The graduate who finishes the reading of five-hundred-page reports, may be so familiar to many things mentioned in these reports, that he reads these reports just like a good student reviews his textbooks. And the success of the graduate who rose to vice president, does not necessarily resulted by what he learns in the course.

To sum up, based on such an unconfirmed presumption, the author’s conclusion is incredible. To better evaluate the argument, the author should provide more evidence to confirm the course’s effectiveness in improving a person’s analyzing ability to what he reads, and justify that such an improvement is necessary to Acme. More details about the two graduates he mentioned will also be useful.
