Who gives society something eternal? Is it the artist or critic? According to the speaker, the artist plays a more significant role in giving society something of lasting value. However, the speaker overlooks the important function of the critic. There’s no doubt that it is the artist creates the eternal art works, nevertheless, the critic plays a crucial role in conveying them to society.
The purpose of the art is to express the private feelings and criticism of the society. With the talents, efforts and special individual experiences, artists often bear the profound insight into the world around them, which make them be able to discover the essentials beneath the external appearance of various phenomena. Only when Beethoven integrated his unmatchable musical talent with the tragedy in his life that he became deaf in his middle age, the immortal symphonies, such as Hero and Fate, can be created. While we listened to the Beethoven’s symphonies we would be offered the confidence and graveness. Except Van Gogh who having the special feeling of colors, shapes, light and the nature of his life together, no others can produce the exciting painting “Sunflower”, which shows the sense of hope.
However, all these works themselves are just finish of artic creations, it does not equate with giving the eternal values in these works to the society. It is only through conveyed and accepted that the eternal values can be realized.
Critics play a crucial role in conveying the values in artic creations and helping them understood, which are artists’ deeper feelings about the world, not appearances. Masses who lack essential background knowledge often cannot appreciate the true meanings beneath the appearances of those works. They may just be fascinated in the combination of some special apparent items, such as color, light or prospective of a picture but ignore the deeper meaning the work contains. While critics usually have the abundant knowledge about the background of the “artic creation”, they are familiar with the creators. They are able to well understand artists’ ideas, feelings and criticism containing in artic works, which should be conveyed and appreciated. And it is the critic who can bridge the gap between the public and the artist. Also take the exciting painting “Sunflower” as an example, when we asked some people why they liked “Sunflower” of Van Gogh, it is possible that they replied that because it looked comfortable and beautiful. However, after heard the explanation of critics to this stimulating painting, people may recognize the creator’s admiration to the strength of life and a sense of hope, which is the eternal value in the painting. Critics help the eternal values in great artic works be realized.
Besides the function mentioned above, critics also play significant roles in systematizing artic work, which contribute to a promising advancement of both art itself and the whole society. Artic works, as created by disparate artists, are inevitably diverse in their contents, themes, styles and so forth. If all of them are presented in front of us, which standing alone, we may feel a kind of racket. While critics can probe the inbeing of them and classify into different categories, in other words, they make a crowd into groups. They make it more efficient and easier to appreciate great artic works for masses. For instance, music is divided into Jazz, Country, Blues, Folk and so forth. Consequently, critics lead to more attentions of common people to art, and help them appreciate the eternal values in artic works, which contribute to the development of art.
To sum up, it is artists who create the eternal values in their creations, however it is critics who have significant roles in conveying them and help them understood, in other words, it is to say it is critics who realize the eternal values. So, it is artists and critics together who give the society something of lasting values. |
