51.The following appeared in a medical newsletter.
"Doctors have long suspected that secondary infections may keep some
patients from healing quickly after severe muscle strain. This hypothesis
has now been proved by preliminary results of a study of two groups of
patients. The first group of patients, all being treated for muscle
injuries by Dr. Newland, a doctor who specializes in sports medicine, took
antibiotics regularly throughout their treatment. Their recuperation time
was, on average, 40 percent quicker than typically expected. Patients in
the second group, all being treated by Dr. Alton, a general physician,
were given sugar pills, although the patients believed they were taking
antibiotics. Their average recuperation time was not significantly
reduced. Therefore, all patients who are diagnosed with muscle strain
would be well advised to take antibiotics as part of their treatment."
The author of this medical newsletter recommends that the whole patients diagnosed with muscle strain would be better to take antibiobics during their treatment. To support this recommendation the author pionts out a suspicion of doctors that the secondary infections may impact negtively on the healing after sever musle strain. Furthermore, a study of two groups of patients has proved that suspicion. However, close scruting of this evidence reveals that it lends little credible support for the author's recommendation.
First of all, the argument rests on the assumption that there is nothing distincness between the test group and control grould except the medine providing. Nevertheless the arguer ignores other relevant factors beween the two groups concerning the age, physical condition, the proportion of males and femails and so forth. It is entirely possible that the test group is composed of young pepole about 25 years while the other group contains people about 60 years old. If this is the case, obviously, people who are more stronger in the test group recuperate quicker and better than people in the control group. Thus, without ruling out the that possibility above, it is difficult to assess the merit of the arguer's recomendation.
In addition, the author fails to eliminate the possibility that maybe the two groups are not in the same stage of the illness. If the people in the control group are more severe than people in the test group, the average recuperation time for test gourp would certainly less than that for the other. In this case, the result of this study would be useless.
Moreover, the different professional background of these two doctors also weaken the reliability of the study. It is likely that patients are treated other method such as rubdown in the test group but not in the control group. Therefore this posibility also make the recommendation dubious.
Finally, the author mistakenly assumes that what is true of individuals in the study which only stand for one small part is also true of the whole patients suffering from muscle strain.
In conclution, the recommendation is simply unconvincing. To convince me that the antibiotics are effective in the treatment of severe patients ill in muscle strain, the author should rule out any factors that would impact the reliability of the study. Even this is the case, it is still unsubstantiated that the antibiotics would be helpful for all the muscle strain patients.
