In order to keep our society progress smoothly and healthily, all kinds of personnel are all strongly needed. Artists and critics both exert positive influence to the whole society and neither should be neglected. Therefore, while admitting the significance of artists, I do not agree with the author for deemphasizing the importance of the critics for the society.

Artists are the ones to create. They have great talents as well as strong senses. During the past several thousand years, countless masterpieces are created by these artist, they paints the beauty of the world, they sings the happiness of people, they writes the love between lovers. Thanks to them, abstract beauty and love now become so close to us, as a result, every one of us has a chance to know how splendid art is and how wonderful our life is. What our human beings treasure most, such as love and beauty, are gathered by these gifted artists and kept in those masterpieces for ever and ever. Time has passed by but human's spirits of the generation are forever remembered.

In addition, by deeply sensing the society and understanding the nature of human beings, artists can have a general perspective and a deep understanding of their society and their generation, which are strongly expressed in their works. Generations after them can get enlightening and even warning from these works to improve their own society. There is no better illustration than Realism, an artistic style which focuses on the manifestation of the society then. Many works of Realism are describing the hard life of the poor which are calling our attention for the poor.

On the other hand, the function of critics can never be deemphasized. It is a widely held opinion that critics do nothing creative but picking up faults from what the artists create. However, this may not be the case. In every society, there are diverse artistic styles. Artists express different thinking by different methods and styles. But what is the main stream of that very society, which can show the spirits of that society the best? Critics play an important role in deciding the main stream of art by praising and criticizing. What is more, many critics who are sensitive to art and good at writing achieved great success and get high popularity. Some of their critiques also last a very long time and are valued by later generations.

In sum, artists and critics are all indispensable to the healthy improvement of the society. If artists are ships in the unbounded sea, then critics are the beacons which guide the direction of the ships and keep them away from storms. For the sake of our current society, we must encourage the rapid development of art, and pay sufficient focus to critics.
