    I agree with the author's assertion insofar as the artist giving something valuable to our society. However, I do not accept that the critic did nothing to promote our society development. In my opinion, both critics and artist should be respected for their work, which is beneficial to our whole society.  
    As we can not ignore, a lot of great artist paved the way of human development, such as Dar Vinci, who created new art and open people's horizon. With their talent, these artists try to show something we ignore in our society, and inspire us to rethink about our lives. What is life? How should we spend it is meaningful? These questions can make people be active facing his problem, and take more attention to the value of his life, which promote our whole society to a new level and it is of last value.
But on the other hand, the function of critic should not be ignored. Though, at sometimes, some critics criticize each other and do nothing valuable to our society, most critics' opinion is to strengthen our nation our even whole human culture. There is an eloquent example that Xun Lu, who was a famous critic in Chinese history and was famous for his ability of thinking deeply and pointing the flaws straightly, criticized the shadow of Chinese old government, old society and old culture. He always worried about our direction of our society and pain of average habitant. What Xun Lu did, contributed a lot to China revolution and Chinese people's spirit, which is significant in Chinese history.
Actually, there is someone who could be called both artist and critic, with more responsibility on their shoulder than others. They observe the world with art sense and make accurate comment about our flaws. A typical example in China is Shuo Wang, who writes novels and criticizes current society problems. He was respected as he stands for average people, and his opinions are always paid attention by government.
So, both artists and critics do play important roles in the society. There is no country is without artists and critics because they are necessary, not only to create new idea but to find problems in our minds. Thus, a society can move forward in a right direction. Additionally, we can not ignore how important critic is in our society, while admitting that artist is necessary. Artist, usually, gives a definition of a life, but the critic trends to take a challenge of flaws in our current society. They both give society something of last value.

我们对题目的理解不相同，我觉得从题目来看，题目是要我们论证艺术家和评论家谁对艺术的贡献比较大，至于题目后面说的who gives society something of lasting value." 我的理解是具有永久艺术价值的作品。下面是我搜到得一个提纲，可能会解释下我的想法

[BEGINE:] The speaker asserts that it is the arts not critics attribute the success of the long lasting arts. While, I fundamentally disagree with this assertion for it in some sense neglect the value of the critics towards the artistic works while, overstate the role of the artists in the creation of a long lasting works. Close scrutiny shows that one priceless works needs the association of the artist and critics.

1.    艺术家创造代表永久价值的艺术品
No one can deny the crucial role of the artists in the creation of the artistic works. For one thing, as it so often pointed out, most of the world famous artist works had been achieved through a long time efforts and all-consuming works of the artistic. This circumstance has especially apparent in the medieval when numerous artistic works have been engaged without any consideration of the contemporary people and seldom can bring the least wealthy to the creators. While, it is the hard efforts of the artist that eventually make the people and critics possible to appreciate and evaluate these works no matter how the contemporary person look at these works.
2.    表面上看，艺术家似乎是唯一因素，但其实批评家也很重要：
Ostensibly, it is the artists that ultimately created and introduced these works and also make it possible to have a “long lasting” effect in the human evolutions. While, without the pursuit of the critics these works also hardly recognized by the common persons let along to have an impressive most of the people's mind.
3.    批评家发现这些艺术品的价值
Firstly, the comments of the critics provide the people with the opportunity to focus the attention on the further meaning of the artistic works. For most of the earnest artists the further meaning for one artistic works is much more important the superficial appearance of it. That is why most of the famous works in the renaissance are impossible for common persons to understand without the explanations and notions of the commenter, for most the common persons place their first glance of the works on the appearance of it while, neglecting the further reflection of the background and other concerning information of these artistic works. For instance, the paint sunflower which was the one of the most famous impressionist works of the Van Gogh, has been impressive by the unique use of the color and painting style which may hardly to comprehend by one individual who have learn nothing about the concerning information about the contemporary position of the authors. Under this circumstance, the work of the critics shows its value. Through the explanations and other form of acknowledging the ideas and other knowledge pertaining to the various aspects of this work, more and more people began to realize the true meaning behind the appearance of this works.
4.    批评家使得艺术不断进步，并促成更出色的艺术品问世
Furthermore, the critics make by criticizes can also contributes the development of the study in the realm of arts and ultimately help the autistics to create a better works in the future achievement. Not only the common persons can learn how to appreciate the profound works of the arts but also the artists themselves also get the real reflect of their works. This is especially important for the young artists who have little accumulation on the creation of the artistic works. Most of the critics have a fully understand the evolutions and real experience on the composers and can give the earnest and useful suggestion for the primary works of these young artists. Certain comments and efforts, some times, can serve as a great imputes for these persons to strive for a better works in their future engagement and ultimately make them possible to achieve a long lasting artistic work.
5.    要创造一件永久价值的艺术品批评家和艺术家缺一不可
As discussed above, though the artists efforts can serve as the paramount significant in the creation of the work, it can not musk the role of the critics in the origination of the long lasting works, for the critics can not long help to the make more persons possible learning and comprehend the true meaning of the arts but also can contributes these artistes to become more skillful and confident in the pursuit of the perfect works.
