"For many years all the stores in our chain have stocked a wide variety of both domestic and imported cheeses. Last year, however, the five best-selling cheeses at our newest store were all domestic cheddar cheeses from Wisconsin. Furthermore, a recent survey by Cheeses of the World magazine indicates an increasing preference for domestic cheeses among its subscribers. Since our company can reduce expenses by limiting inventory, the best way to improve profits in all of our stores is to discontinue stocking many of our varieties of imported cheese and concentrate primarily on domestic cheeses."

Moreover, the survey may be misleading or the respondents were primarily inclined to domestic cheeses or it is the ones that choose domestic cheeses that return their responds to the magazine. Without ruling out these possible factors, nothing about the comparison can be derived from the survey.


Third, the author commit a fallacy assumption that reducing stocking of imported cheeses will result in limited inventory. Actually, there is no direct between the inventory and the stocking type. Instead, the inventory amount mainly depends on the demand. As long as the customer's demand doesn't decrease, the inventory may not decrease. Only when the stocking of imported cheese is more than the demand of it can we discontinue it.

Finally, there is no guarantee that this action will improve the profits. Maybe it is imported cheese that is really profitable, or the highlight of the chain. Moreover, there may be better means to raise profits. One action that we can think out is that we can allocate stocking of the chain to different stores according to the preference of person at that location. That would make advantage of the chain type of stores.

In sum, lacking scrutiny reasoning, the conclusion is not convincing. To get a better measure to improve profit, a deeper investigates and a broader thought may be needed.
