Issue 153
"Students should bring a certain skepticism to whatever they study. They should question what they are taught instead of accepting it passively."

There is a public controversy over the issue of whether students should bring a certain skepticism to whatever they study. I agree that skepticisms based on the basic principles are advantageous to the promotion of students’ ability on judgment. However, excessive skepticism might defeat such a purpose.
To acquire the ability on judgment, a person should try to doubt something unreasonable, at least unreasonable to him. For a student, only after doubting, can he deliberate the thing he questioned, and then attain a more reasonable opinion-at least to him-about it. He may hold the opinion without saying out. But, if he likes discussion as well, he will discuss or debate with others, who may agree with this particular thing, or hold another objective opinion about it. By exchanging their own ideas and thus making their ideas more comprehensive, they will quite possibly benefit from the discussion or debate.
Considering a student, who accept anything simply and passively, can he attain the ability on judgment? Hardly can he do, because judgment ability calls for carefully thinking on several aspects of a thing, and what we are taught from teachers, are usually about a single aspect. To understand more comprehensive, everybody need to doubt and then think more. A person who is lazy in thinking, will finally find that he has learnt nothing essential but a series of facts and opinions copied from others, not to mention his promotion of judgment ability.
Teachers, even those experiencing ones, may commit some fallacies on their classrooms sometime. In this condition, accepting without any skepticism might bring an illusion to students. But, if someone oppose what the teacher claim according to the contrary between the teacher’s assertion and the basic principle, and then give another explanation conforming better to the basic principle, such teaching errors may be avoided. Students’ understanding on knowledge, could be more insightful as well.
On one hand, students should be encouraged to doubt. On the other hand, any skepticism should base on a principle, including the theorems in particular subjects and the moral and value principle. Without the basic principle, skepticisms may beyond normal limits, or even turn to extreme. A student excellent in judging, should make decision after his own consideration, not just oppose what he learns for skepticism itself.
In sum, skepticisms based on basic principles, are usually advantageous to students’ study, and should be advocated in education. Since it should be took in a moderate way, society, schools and teachers should endeavor to guide students together. |
