Issue 48. "The study of history places too much emphasis on individuals. The most significant events and trends in history were made possible not by the famous few, but by groups of people whose identities have long been forgotten."
历史研究过于关注个人。历史上最有意义的事件和潮流能够成为可能不是因为几个少数的名人而是一些身份早就被淡忘的人群。
少数和多数,精英和大众

Whether the most significant events and trends in history were made possible by the famous few or groups of people has long been discussed. In my opinion, it is common people who determine the destiny of society, and famous few are just the typical commissaries of people.

Admittedly, individuals, such as heros and giants, have concernful impacts on the development of human history. A typical example is Washington, who was the American forces in the Revolutionary War and then elected President of the fledgling country. Without his leadship, the way to independency would be longer; without his personal property, internal conflicts would break out; without his modesty to refuse to continue president work, autarchy may appear  in later period. Therefore, giants can use their personal abilities or charms to affect the tendency of history and society.

However, famous individuals can just affect but not determine the history and society trends, for they are nothing but the delegates of common people. As mentioned above, the status and roles of Washington were elected by common people. Independency of one race is an inevitable trends of human history. As a result, if there's no Washington, some one other, maybe called Cashington or Washingson or others, must be pushed to the historic stage to lead the large forces of independency. Hence, we can conclude that Washington are nothing but the typical delegate of all people in the New Continent. Actually, it's not difficult to understand why our society needs those delegates. Firstly, Confucious, a famous philosophy and educater in China, once said: "Where there are people, there are quarrels." It follows who appeases those quarrels. At this moment, delegates play the role to build or rebuild solidificationd through their leaderships. "Comity is power", that is what Francis Bacon, British philosopher, once said. Secondly, every time common people want to express their thoughts and feelings, the strength of thousands of farraginous voices are much weak and faint, while one strong voice of delegates can be as powerful as thounsands of fists. Therefore, it is necessary to set up giants, heros or leaders as delegates of common people.

Actually, groups of people play final decisive roles. To illustrate, I want to take King Charles I as an example. As the King of England, Scotland and Ireland, he was the delegates of the whole British. At the beginning, he had made peace with Spain and France by 1630, when trade and commerce grew and the King's finances were stable. However, he provoked civil war for his own benefit and dominion, so he betried the benefits of the whole British and was not qualified to be the king. The King was beheaded on a scaffold outside the Banqueting House at Whitehall on 30 January, 1649. In this case, common people certainly played the final decisive role in overthrowing his governing.

In sum, judging from the reasons mentioned above, we can safely conclude that it is common people who determine the destiny of society, and famous few are just the typical delegates of people.

Admittedly, individuals, such as heros(heroes) and giants, have concernful impacts on the development of human history. A typical example is Washington, who was the American forces in the Revolutionary War and then (was) elected President of the fledgling country. Without his leadship(leadership), the way to independency would be longer; without his personal property, internal conflicts would break out; without his modesty to refuse to continue president work, autarchy may appear  in later period. Therefore, giants can use their personal abilities or charms to affect the tendency of history and society.

However, famous individuals can just affect but not determine the history and society trends, for they are nothing but the delegates of common people. (和上一段的观点完全对立,我感觉逻辑上不太好,可以说though famous individuals, to some extent, determine the progresses of history and society, they are…)As mentioned above, the status and roles of Washington were elected by common people. Independency of one race is an inevitable trends of human history. As a result, if there's no Washington, some one other, maybe called Cashington or Washingson or others, must be pushed to the historic stage to lead the large forces of independency. 写的很好,思路很清晰,错误也比较少,用词造句再丰富一点就perfect啦
