The arguer makes a conclusion that the decline in fish population in Tria's waters is the result of overfishing, rather than pollution. Furthermore, the arguer also claims that the best way to restore Tria's fish population and to protect all of Tria's marine wildlife is to abandon its regulations and adopt those of Omni. To support the assumption, the arguer points out that the populations of fish in Tria's water are declining, while those of Omni are not. However, the argument suffers from several critical flaws. In the first place, the arguer fails to rule out the possibility that the reason of the decline in fish populations in Tria's waters is pollution, rather than overfishing. Although the regulations of marine sanctuary on Tria ban dumping and offshore oil drilling within 20 miles while fishing is not banned, the arguer must take into account the possibility that the pollution produced by dumping and offshore oil drilling may transfer to the island within 20 miles. Under this circumstances, the quality of water in Tria island may be severely polluted, resulting the death of the fish. If so, then the arguer can not safely draw the conclusion that the decline in fish population in Tria's waters is the result of overfishing, not pollution. In addition, the arguer commits a fallacy of false analogy. The arguer unfairly assumes that the regulations of Omni are suitable and applicable to Tria island. According to the argument, the the marine sanctuary on Omni island has regulations that ban dumping, offshore oil drilling, and fishing within 10 miles and reports no significant decline in its fish populations, however, the arguer fails to provide evidence to prove that the two places are similar. Perhaps the varieties of marine wildlife in both areas are totally different, or perhaps the populations of fish in Omni island are much larger than that of Tria island, or perhaps the quality of water in Omni island is much better than that of Tria island. Without ruling out these possibilities, we can not trust the arguer that the regulations of the Omni island are the best way to protect of Tria's wildlife while abandoning its own regulations. In sum, the arguer fails to deeply analyze the reason why the fish populations in Tria island are declining. To make it logically acceptable, the arguer has to provide information concerning whether the dumping and offshore oil drilling affect the quality of water or not. What is more, to better evaluate the argument, more information concerning the regulations of Omni island must be concretely provided, especially concerning the basic characters of both islands, to rule out the abovementioned possibility that would undermine the arguer’s claim.
