argument 140:The following appeared in a report of the Committee on Faculty Promotions and Salaries at Elm City University. During her seventeen years as a professor of botany, Professor Thomas has proved herself to be well worth her annual salary of $50000.Her classes are among the largest at the university, demonstrating her popularity among students. Moreover, the money she brought to the university in research grants has exceeded her salary in each of the last two years. Therefore, in consideration of Professor Thomas' demonstrated teaching and research abilities, we recommend that she receive a $10000 raise and a promotion to Department Chairperson; without such a raise and promotion , we fear that professor Thomas will leave Elm City University for another college.

      This report was given to ask for raise and promotion for Professor Thomas at Elm City University, however, evidences for the raise and promotion are not reasonable enough to support this request. The first fallacy is that the author swifts the concept from popularity among students to the teaching ability without took their difference into account. There are many standards to judge the teaching ability of a teacher, expect for the popularity among students, the grades of the students, the teaching approaches she uses in classes and the teaching experience may all should be taken into consideration. Even if popularity is the most important standard to evaluate the teaching ability, the number of the students in her class, however, is not adequate to demonstrate her class is popular of the students. Other possible causes of the large number in her class was ignored by the author in this report, for example, probably the course itself she taught is especially useful when seeking job after graduation, or her examination of this course was more easier to pass than other courses.
     In addition, it's not sufficient to convince us that Professor Thomas' research ability is excellent only because the money she brought to the research grants has exceeded her salary in each of the last two years. To evaluate her research ability, we should also be informed the information about the achievement she has obtained in the research as well as the papers she has delivered. What's more, we have no idea about the standard to judge whether the research money that exceeds her salary is high enough or not. Comparison with other professor in this university should be given to clarify the measurement of the research money.
      Even if the evidences shown above are adequate to demonstrate Professor Thomas' ability in teaching and researching, it can not show that Professor Thomas is the best choice to the position of the chairperson of the Department. How about the ability of other professors in this department? How about their working experience in this department? And how about the contribution they has made to the department during these years? All these questions have been omitted by the author when claiming his request in this report.
     In conclusion, given not sufficient evidences to support his argument, the author fails to persuade us to accept his request about the raise and promotion for Professor Thomas. In order to make his argument more reasonable, in my opinion, an investigation about the ability of Professor Thomas in both teaching and research as well as the comparison with other professors should be included in his report.

To evaluate her research ability, we should also be informed the information about the achievement she has obtained in the research as well as the papers she has delivered. What's more, we have no idea about the standard to judge whether the research money that exceeds her salary is high enough or not. Comparison with other professor in this university should be given to clarify the measurement of the research moneyresearch grants.


      Even if the evidences showed above are adequate to demonstrate Professor Thomas' ability in teaching and researching, it can not show that Professor Thomas is the best choice to the position of the chairperson of the Department. How about the ability of other professors in this department? How about their working experience in this department? (我感觉写这类文章尽量不要用这类疑问句,尽量用陈述句 ) And how about the contribution they has made to the department during these years? All these questions have been omitted by the author when claiming his request in this report.


     In conclusion, given not sufficient evidences to support his argument, the author fails to persuade us to accept his request(她没请求)about the raise and promotion for Professor Thomas. In order to make his argument more reasonable, in my opinion, an investigation about the ability of Professor Thomas in both teaching and research as well as the comparison with other professors should be included in his report这只是你上文提到的一点,总结应该全面).
