Argument 238 The following appeared in a memorandum from the president of Mira Vista College to the college's board of trustees.
"At nearby Green Mountain College, which has more business courses and more job counselors than does Mira Vista College, 90 percent of last year's graduating seniors had job offers from prospective employers. But at Mira Vista College last year, only 70 percent of the seniors who informed the placement office that they would be seeking employment had found full-time jobs within three months after graduation, and only half of these graduates were employed in their major field of study. To help Mira Vista's graduates find employment, we must offer more courses in business and computer technology and hire additional job counselors to help students with their resumès and interviewing skills."

In this argument, the speaker claims that Mira Vista (MV) collage should offer and computer technology and hire additional job counselors to help students with their resumes and interviewing skill. To support the claim, the speaker cites the example of Green Mountain (GM) collage, which has these course and counselors, and 90% of its graduating seniors hand job offers last year. However, I find the argument unpersuasive in many aspects.

To begin with, the fact that 90% of graduating seniors hand job offers last year lends no support to the argument. The speaker fails to provide the evidence that these students found job because of more business courses and more counselors. Moreover, they only hand offer, it is not means that they hand found job, which is weakens the argument.

Furthermore, the fact that 70% of seniors who informed the placement office that they would be seeking employment had found full-time jobs at MV collage is weak evidence. Perhaps these students all found very good jobs, but the jobs found by students of GM collage are not very good. It is also possible that many seniors who found jobs but not informed to the placement office. The argument is greatly weakened. And only one year’s information is insufficient data to support that argument.

Even if these courses and counselors really could help the students of GM collage to find job. The problem is that two collages are not similar enough to justify the analogy. GM collage many be a business collage, so its students need business courses, but MV collage may be a science collage, some business courses may be not able to help its students. Furthermore, some skills may have influence in finding job, but the most important thing is ability.

To sum up, the argument is unconvincing as it stands. To support the argument, the speaker should provide more sufficient information that these courses and job counselors are necessary and useful to MV collage.
