The follow is a memo from the business manager of Valu-Mart stores."Over 70
percent of the respondents to a recent survey reported that they are required
to take more work home with them from the workplace than they were in the
past. Since Valu-Mart has not seen impressive sales in its office-supply
departments inteh past, we should take advantage of this work-at-home trend
by increasing at all Valu-Mart stores the stock of home office machines such
printers, small copy machines, paper shredders, and fax machines. We will
also increase stock of office supplies such as paper, pens, and staplers.
With these changes, our office-supply departments will become the most
profitable component of our stores.
1.调查数字有误:范围(是否in the range of V-M);多少人接受访问(少数无代表性)
;访问者的具体情况(年龄职业)。结果会有误差。
2.被访问着不一定需要新设备,可能只在电脑上完工。他们的态度可能只是抱怨,不想
买东西。可能随着抱怨增加,加班不会持续长久,那么增加数量无意义。
3. 销量的好坏取决于质量、种类、方便程度。单纯增加数量不能increase profit,反而
可能cause the profit to remain or on a sharp deline.
In the memo mentioned above, the business manager of that store hastly
generalizes that Valu-Mart will become the most profitable by means of
increasing the stock of home office machines and office supplies. He also
cites two evidence to support that conclusion. however, these evidences are
far strong enough to support the conclusion, and the conclusion is spicious
on the second thought.
First of all, the statistics from the memo is unperusuasive. It does not
mention any information about the people who take part in the survey. There
is possiblity that that people are not in the range of Valu-Mart, so they
don't do some shopping in Valu-Mart. Also, we don't know how many people are
in the respondents. Assuming that there are only ten or twenty people in this
survey, the statistics cannot significantly reflect the trend of situation in
this area.The improtant information of respondentors such as age and career
is necessary as well, without them it is difficult for the author to make
the meaningness of the statistics given in the memo , for that matter, the
determination made by the manager is unreasonable.
On the other hand, even if the statistics are collected in the right palce
and deal with in the right method, there is no evidence to show people will
be in need of the new home office machines or th office supplies. For
example, they can complete their work on their own computer but not print or
copy another one, and the attitude of them would be complaintive about the
awful working-at-home trend. Or else, with the complain from workers, the
trend should not keep for a long time, then insrease the stock of the
machines and supplies is meanless for the profit.lacking such evidence to
illustrate there really have relationship on the workplace changing and the
aquirement of the office machines, we cannot be convinced by the author.
Lastly, Solely increse of stock of these appliance will not necessarily
increase the profit. Quality,diversity,price ,conveniece and much else should
be taken into account. Without considering of these factors, it will probably
conversely cause the profit to reman to on a sharp decline.Indiition, without
knowing about the other stores' profits during these time period, whether
Valu-Mart will become the most profitable component of these stores will be
unknown. |
