Issue 36 "The greatness of individuals can be decided only by those who live after them, not by their contemporaries."(帖子说是38怎么是36啊,这里)In this statement, the speaker claims that whether an individual is great or not can be decided only by those who live after him/her. In my view, the speaker’s claim is improper. In some areas, the statement may be right, but in some other areas, the greatness of individuals can be decided not only by those who live after (them)who, but also by their contemporaries. I will provide evidence to support my standpoint. Admittedly, prodigies often could not be understanded by contemporaries. Their opinions or works are usually accepted after many years even hundreds of years. {Contemporaries cannot understand and accept their brilliant minds. (前后这两句话,是因果关系吧,应该写成一句) And also these minds exceeded contemporaries’ understanding.} Van Gogh is a good case in point. Van Gogh’s works is (加 too? ) abstract and difficult to understand. He created (前后时态不一致) the impressionism in painting, which was accepted by people many years ago (ago就不要了吧) after his death. Nevertheless, he pursued his ideals and faith until he could not able to pick up a pencil. And Einstein is another representative of this kind. As his famous theory, relativity was not accepted by his contemporaries. Many (a great many ) people also cannot understand this theory now. So, to some extent, the greatness of individuals may be decided by those who live after them.Nevertheless, it is not always in this situation. In many areas, the greatness of individuals can be decided by their contemporaries. Especially, in (the) realm of apply(application) science, many great inventions are recognized by contemporaries. These inventions could directly benefit people. And human’s method of work and life may change because of these inventions. Take (light) Bulb as an example, Edison invented bulb which change the humankind’s life and work. It let the world began an electronic ear(era吧). And Edison’s contemporaries admitted his greatness.(注意时态)In realm of business, Microsoft and Bill Gates is (are? ) a good example to show this point. Microsoft is the biggest software company in the world and Bill Gates is the richest man in the world. No one would deny that Bill Gates is great. Also in realm of art, there are many great works and artists admitted by their contemporaries. Such Goethe, his works were not only accepted in his era, his most famous work, Faust, which was considered as one of the greatest three epics. And Beethoven was also considered as the greatest composer of his day. On the other hand, some good films, songs, paintings, books would be very popular. Many people like and accept these excellent works, like a classical film--Roman Holiday. To sun (sum) up, the speaker’s claim is unpersuasive. Sometimes, the greatness of individuals could not be understanded by their contemporaries, but could be admitted by those who live after them. However, in some areas, the situation is not so, the greatness of individuals can be decided by their contemporaries.
