TOPIC: ISSUE88 - "Technologies notonly influence but actually determine social customs and ethics."
WORDS: 491 TIME: 01:00:23 DATE: 2008-3-31 12:49:08
Can technologies really influence, even determine social customs and ethics? In my standpoint, I agree that technologies just influence social customs and ethics other than determine them.
To begin with, the development and advancement of the technologies alter humans' daily life so that some social customs which formed in the foretime, now, are likely to vanish gradually. Some examples can support this claim: In Shanghai, groups of neighbors were fond of enjoying shade and chatting together outside in summer after the dinner, such a existence had continued for a long time till the air-conditioners were introducedand became a popularization throughout the whole city. Meanwhile, E-mail replaces the traditional ways of letters; a dream that we can take a short travelaboard by air at the weekend comes true and it permutes to stay at home or seea film. So many social customs are influenced by tech that human beings' life is improved.
Yet, some traditional customs are never influenced by technologies. Retrospect the history, it is not so difficult forus to discover that a lot of cultures are kept down, even are in vogue up tothe present. Parents still hang some gifts on the Christmas tree when Christmas comes; A turkey is never forgot on the table the day Thanks Giving occurs; ricedumplings have been popular for two thousand years in China in honor of a greatpoet named "QuYuan". It is undoubted that traditional social customsare a type of a representation of the civilization, which is an acknowledgedmarrow, concentrating humans' wisdom, idea and experience. Thus, the mere claimthat technologies determine social customs are unreliable.
Similar to the traditional customs, ethicscannot be influenced, even decided by technologies, either. Actually, technologies can bring the physical gratification to people, while abiding ethics, such as hard working, honesty, self-discipline, friendly, personal responsibility, will beauty our souls and build a harmonious society. If aninfant is looked after by a high-tech robot, can this baby grow lustily?Without a moral care for and educate, can he/she become a regular adult?
By contrast, ethics possess a decision of technologies. A typical and well famous instance is the argur about whether we should take an advantage of the "Cloning". Most scientists agree that cloning will treat a lot of diagnose diseases and improve humans life, while the public and philosophers object such a tech to be used in the society because a entirely possibility that decades or hundreds people which is completely same to you are built through the "Cloning". However, such a possibility will thoroughly destroy the order of the whole society, and overturn ethics, too. Finally, the reason of which the"Cloning" is prohibited in most countries is due to the reorganization that people believe ethics are more important than technologies in every aspect.
In conclusion, there is an interactionbetween technologies and social customs and ethics. The best way to improve ou rsociety is that we should not only develop the technologies, but keep thesocial cultures and ethics.
这是一篇很猥琐的文章,哎,怎么办......
